Yes, I know who he is. If you want the best quality Peru boa, then it’s him. There isn’t a whole lot of people who breed them, as they are one of the harder boas to do so.

Do you have pics of this petco. I have never once, in all the petco’s I have been in, seen anything other than common BCI’s and Central Americans....which were obviously crosses and not pure. And what were they charging for these "Peruvians"?

I would never buy pets from Petco, Petsmart or a retail chain pet store. I wouldn’t buy a dog or cat from these places, so why buy anything else? Snakes and reptiles are no less important to me than a dog or cat.

I know for a fact - not hearsay, conjecture, or assumation - that these retailers purchase bulk animals from farms and the majority of these animals are doomed. Many are captive hatched from wild caught adults. Farm animals have the highest mortality rate, usually 80%. Most of the time, Petco especially, has an animal that has never been fed and you don’t know this until you get it home and 3 months later its dead.

Add to this the near complete lack of knowledge of these animals, not to be confused with their product knowledge which can be quite good, and you’ve got an animal that is typically stressed out, starving to death, and most likely going to die after you buy it.

Do you know what happens to ball pythons or boas after they’ve been in those tiny enlcosures for roughly two months? They are written off as a store loss. You can figure it out from there.

There is a Petco near me that has one clerk that is very good on snakes. She’s on her game and I give her credit for being the first I have ever met. She’s worked hard to turn their reptile department around and improve their rep, but even she admits that the company’s policies on "stock" are terrible for the welfare of snakes. She has rescued quite a few animals from her Petco, all because she saw them as doomed. This Petco is in the city limits, so they can only sell Balls now as all others (nearly all) are illegal thanks to our Mayor and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Dept.

The Petsmart near me has one guy who knows his stuff, but he only works 2-3 days a week. He blames the low wages for a high turn-over which leads to ignorant employees selling snakes to unsuspecting newbs or simply not understanding the care needed for ball pythons. I was just in there Wednesday for one of my cats - you don’t want to know the spiel I heard on ball pythons! Truly is was that bad. This store is located outside the city limits, so they can sell boas and have. However this one employee tries to keep them from not stocking boas simply because he knows the supplier’s methods and abhors it. Most of the stock would be CH or WC babies, and sold to the interested 8-10 year old as "a great beginner’s snake!" *insert crocodile smile here*

My wife, who has only owned a ball python once before, knows more than your typical clerk who gets their info from an information sheet provided by the management. What she knows about Boas comes from her reading from experts such as herpetology pioneer Phillippe Vosjoli, talking to reputable breeders, and doing massive comparitive research.

If you got a petco what doesn’t fit in with the rest, consider yourself blessed.

i wouldnt buy from them either but the petco here in san antonio has some its sad they’re i really bad condition we should like sue petco and pets mart for poor animal care

I wouldn’t undetake such an endeavor for 4 reasons;

1) That’s got to be a joke
2) Litigation costs money
3) You have to provide substantial proof
4) The end result might be worse than the current condition

If the snakes are being ill treated, the worse thing to do is draw public attention to it. That eventually leads to a ban on snakes. EX; Houston, Texas and the local big mouthed who barked about snakes. Now, years later, they are illegal in the city limits and the entire process can be traced back to a rabid activist who thought she was helping. She ended up doing more harm.

If someone were serious about affecting change, the best route is to calmly discuss better training and treatment with the retailer and leave activists where they belong - out of the way. You can get more with a smile and effort than with threats.
