Soon to be a rtb owner

i found out what kind im going to be getting. its a central american red tail boa and im getting it for $150 from the local pet shop. they dont have it yet but they will be ordering it and it will be male. i have decided to keep it in a 10gallon for now till im able to build a cage. i have to save up $150 and money for decor and food. i have decided to order $100 worth of mice (going to be feeding 3 snakes) would it be ok on mouse fuzzies for at least half a year or would it be better to order 1/3 fuzzies 1/3 semi adult 1/3 adults?

Wolf Rin, my 3 month old baby boa eats small adult mice, around 13-18 grams. Also, I would suggest a 10 gallon to start, but get a 20 gallon really soon. because they grow fast :).

That’s a pretty good deal lol. One thing to consider though, especially since this is your first red tail, is that central americans are *typically* more aggressive and nippy than common colombian boas. I’m not saying that all are mean, but some central american localities are known for being nippy. My nicaraguan would strike at me every chance he could.

can u post some pics of centrals? i couldnt find very many pics on google. r they very different looking then colombians? i dont really mind getting bite im so used to scratches, bites, and cuts lol. once i had a big cut on my leg and i didnt even notice it till i sat down and felt blood on my hand when i touched my leg. it wasnt to bad but my friend freaked out when she saw it lol. i know what to do if a snake bites me: stay calm, DONT pull the snake off!, and calmly wait for it to let go. my male corn snake has bitten me a few times lol

The only central american I’ve had was a male nicaraguan.
This is his as a baby:

And at two years:

That’s only a 12 quart tub he’s in, so it gives you an idea of the average size of central americans. He was 42" at 2 1/2 years old.

Centrals are different from RTBs, the males top out at 3 feet, females average about 5.

You are paying three times the amount for an average Nicaraguan. Normals don’t sell for over $60 here in Ohio. And please... don’t buy from a petstore. They suck.

Just get a tub. They cost $7 at wal-mart, and if you drill or melt holes in it, they will keep humidity and temperature way better than any cage or tank. Plus Nics need about 60% humidity, unless you live in Central America, keeping humidity in a glass tank or cage is kind of a pain in the buttmunch. Plus tubs are lighter, easier to clean and of course, cheaper.

Where are you getting your mice from? Rodentpro and The Big Cheese have great deals on mice, and are very good about quality and sizing their products. I know breeders that spend $150 every other month to feed their colonies of 50 snakes or so.

Hope this helps,
Sara
