In the fifth picture down his nostrils look puffed out. Are they normally like that? If so he most likely has a respiratory infection. If he’s been burrowing in the substrate a lot he may have some stuck in his nose. It also looks very dry in his cage, do you have a way to monitor the humidity? What are his cage temps? How well insulated is that window? Could he possibly be getting a draft from it? Also look inside his mouth (if you can) do you see any yellow, cheesy looking stuff in there? I agree with the comment made about adding a hidebox. I would recommend putting one on the warm end of the cage and one on the cool end. He looks like a nice hypo, I don’t see anything else that that says he anything other than a nicely colored orange hypo... Amie |

What I would advise has been said. Make sure your temps are high 80s on the warm side, low 80s on the cool side, perhaps a larger water dish under the heat lamp or partially on top of the UTH, depending on which you use, to create more Humidity if its under 50%. Those look like aspen chips, but they can be dusty...usually they are fine, but if he is commin from newspaper, it may take him some time to adjust to wood. And they do tend to dry out the tank. They are pretty snakes. When in doubt, take em to a reptile vet. My snakes have been doing that as well recently, because I have not been handling them as much ( only once a week at most since Im also taking care of baby corns ugh!). They don’t do it in their enclosures at all, so I know its not an RI. Looks like a good size enclosure, and glad to meet another attic dweller! |

There are a great many options as far as bedding goes, I prefer aspen because it’s cheaper and easier to clean up then any of the other beddings. I would not recommend using newspaper, redtails like to burrow up underneath their bedding, they can’t do that with the newspaper, news paper doesn’t really help to much with keeping your temps up either. Other people use coconut bedding and cypress bedding. Really it’s up to you. In my opinion your cage is just a little to open and your lamp shouldn’t be on the outside but inside, closer to where the snake can bask, I combine UVB lighting with and undertank heating pad to keep the temps level. Also, invest in a spray bottle and mist your tank once a day, doesn’t matter if it’s in the morning or night. Your boa does infact need a hide, you can either buy one or make one. Other then that you need to keep you temps and humidity up, also my boa’s hiss when their getting ready to shed or are hungry, which doesn’t happen to me often, you may want to try feeding him and soaking him. |

A few years ago a I received a freshly imported Nic that had a nose puffed up much like then one in your picture. It was not wet, but he did make a wheezing type noise when he was breathing. I thought he had sustained rostral damage and he appeared to have only one nostril. I treated him for the RI and cleaned what turned out to be caked mucus off of his nose and everything was fine a few weeks later. Amie |

Try to cover half that screen lid with either a piece of plexi, aluminum foil, piece of plastic signage...something to prevent the humidity from escaping. Then have the water dish just partway under that lamp so it evaporates and raises your humidity. Then youll want to create that hide. It can be a NEW cat litter box turned upside down with a hole slightly larger than the largest part of his body. or a half log or whatever...even fake plants hung down tent like work. Something where the snake can hide and feel less vulnerable. Vet is a good idea. He is a beautiful snake. RIs are best caught early. They have a better prognosis. Good luck! He is lucky you got him sounds like! Keep reading here and other sites. I like Vosjoli’s complete Boa handbook. Its a good read for novices and intermediate boa owners. |

This is boo, she is 8 ft long, I just described her hide area to you, she has a wooden cage now that stands 6 ft t and is 4 ft wide and 3 ft deep.
This in ginger, she uses the biggest half log made, she measures in at 4’5’’
This is romeo, he also use’s the largest half log made, he measures in at 3’11’, he has a hypo gene.... His mother was hypo. Both smaller boas have a 40 long aquarium and are moving up here pretty soon. |

As far as the being nervous about touching his head, I would recomend you not feel that way when trying to handle him. He can sense you tention and that can cause problems. Get him vet checked, while your at the vet ask to have him probed to make sure it’s a male, feed him and soak him really good in the bath tub with luke warm water. If you snake has a respiratory infection your vet is going to advise you as I have, My male had a RI about a year ago, I cranked the heat up and kept him really warm and the RI went away in a week. You do need to think about possibly upgrading from the jewlry case to a wooden one. Wood hold heat and humidity better and your snake doesn’t feel so out in the open where all the predators are which could be another reason he is hissing, he is scared because he is out in the open and can’t escape to a safer place. You don’t have to do what I’m recommending, I’m just making a few suggestions to possibly make your guy happier. A happy snake is a healthy one. |

You can also drill through hardwood sticks, one inch from either end all the way through, then string them on a wire to make a sort of log Or hot glue plants to a series of interwoven sticks, and lean it on one wall of the tank. You can bend it and shape it however works. |
