 My New Boa

This is what I got from the Long Island Reptile Expo yesterday. It’s supposed to be Pastel Hypo.

The enclosure’s kind of boring for now. I’m working on it.

I also picked up one of these while I was there. This awesome creature is my favorite of the pythons. The Water Python.

More pictures in the pythons forum.

Yeah. I can’t wait until she’s bigger. It’ll be a while though.

Well, I would have waited a little longer for her to settle, but...

anyways, she ate! That’s one major hurdle down :)

I usually do wait. Those hoppers were actually for my king snake. I give him two or three per feeding. I just thought I’d put one of them with that boa and see what happens. She took it as soon as it left the container and hit the floor next to her.

Beautiful snake, but just a pointer, redtails aren’t dessert dwellers, sand is not a good substrate for them. I love the water python.

What does cage carpet have to do with desert dwelling? I keep all three of my boas on it and it does very well.

Oh, I see what you did there. You thought it was sand. That’s just a light brown cage carpet.

I appreciate the concern, but I know what I’m doing.

Yeah, I know what I’m doing to. From the way the lines curve on the sides of the tank it looks like sand, I don’t prefer cage carpet for boas but hey, it’s your snakes. Beautiful snakes.

What don’t you like about it? That’s all I’ve ever used for boas. I liked it so much I switched all my snakes over to it. I don’t like the way other bedding looks, I hate the way it smells when you spray the tank and get everything wet, and it’s more work to clean. The carpet is easy, scentless, and washable. You can get some nice humiduty if you soak the whole thing, stick it in the cage and put it under a heat light. Most important of all, I like the way it looks.

Thats just the thing, you have to soak it to get good humidity, no snake likes to lay on soping wet bedding. I don’t like it because I’m a fan of natural enclosures. I like to bring out the natural behaviors in my snakes. You may like scentless, but your snake likes to smell his normal surroundings. I don’t care have you set up your tanks, I just prefer not to use carpet. It’s boring and un natural for your snake.

I soak half or a little more. The part by the water bowl. Underneath the log hide and around it is dry. Don’t want to get that wood wet for too long. Snakes may enjoy a natural smell, but there’s five tanks and right now they’re in my room. No way I’m dealing with that.

I’ve taken the natural approach before. The only thing natural about it is the look. The behavior of the snakes was exactly the same. So I went with my own preference.

It was either carpet or newspaper. I’m sure we could agree that the carpet looks a lot better than some old newspaper. Now that’s boring. Those are probably some of my least favorite enclosures.

Anyway, do you have a thread with pictures of your snakes? I’d like to check them out. Especially if you have any larger ones.
