 Heating large enclosure

I put Iella in a 6’x2’x2’ wood enclosure last week and thought everything was ok. I brought home a temp gun today and realized that 1) my thermometers suck and 2) I have a small hot spot, but my warm side in whole is off. I am heating the enslosure with a heat mat and a 250w che, both run off of a thermostat set at 90. My hot spot, directly under the che, is spot on, but this is a small area in general, the warm side is in the low to mid 80’s and the cool side is in the low 70’s. My question is how do i fix this? 1) bump my thermostat to the high 90’s, this will raise the warm and cool side temps, it will just be very hot just under the che. Or do I 2) install a low wattage che on the cool side, thus boosting the overall temp of the enclosure? If I am correct, the second option is the way to go. Now another part of this question is, right now my thermostat probe is directly under the che, should I move it out from under it? Now that I think of it, that may solve my problem all together. Sorry about being long winded, this is just bothering me. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Wow, you seemed to have solved your own problem. So, yeah, CHEs heat up really fast and getting to 90 is no problem for them, so move your thermostat probe out from directly under it. Keep it close, but not RIGHT under the CHE. If that doesn’t work, look into Radiant Heat Panels. I use these. They are great. I get mine from Reptile Basics. They go in the cage, but your snake can’t get burnt. They screw into the cage ceiling. For a 6’ cage you would need the 80 watt RHP. They keep your hot side hot and do a nice job of keeping up the ambient temperature. The safety aspect is just great, and the fact that they can be placed in the cage means you don’t have any excessive vents or circulation to cool down your cage. Good luck man.

Dumb question, but while I’m still working on bumping the temps, everytime I go in the enclosure, she is in her hide on the cool side. The temp there is about 72-73 degrees. If she was too cold, she would move, wouldn’t she?

Don’t mean to sound like a noob, but what is a CHE?

Yes a che is a ceramic heat emitter.

If she were too cold she would move... except. A snake will choose too cold or too hot to feel as safe as possible. You may want to add a hide somewhere around the middle of the tank, see if she goes in it. It may be that the hot side is too hot for her. Seems unlikely, but adding a hide just at the edge of the warm side would probably be a good idea.

CP just turned me onto these. They look FABULOUS. Link Im going to be ordering one up in short order for my new tank. He says they are sooo much better than CHE because though they create a nice 90* hot spot and heat up the tank well, the unit itself never goes about 120*, therefore no more inadvertent snake cooking!!!

Those sound great, but I question their ability to heat an entire cage. You’ll have to let us know how they work.
