One reason is to help them thermoregulate. If they’re too warm they can lighten up, if they are too cold they can darken. Gravid females will darken to help them absorb more heat. Light/dark phases also help them blend into their surroundings. They also darken up when stressed. Most of mine will change to their lighter colors just before dark every day then they change back to their darker colors by day’s light. Amie
