I’m new here and new to caring for a red tail boa so bare with me. I understand you can’t use pine or cedar in the enclosure. My friend made a top for my enclosure out of redwood, can I use this? Do I need to treat the wood and how??

I understand the desire to be friendly and helpful. But giving bad advise could actually be a death sentence. Hate to see you fall into that trap.
And since you have a lot of potential, you can learn and pass on the good things. Just do a little research first and offer your findings.

Opinions are just that...everyone has 1...try to separate the opinions and facts by using search methods. If not sure , ask...

Respectfully,

Chris

You can stain it, then spar varnish it. (Marine spar varnish comes in Glossy and flat) Let it outgas (Dry until there are no fumes at all) COMPLETELY before using it. Redwood is toxic- any scented woods are a bad idea unless you seal them (And sealing them makes it way easier to sanitize the tank anyway)- harder woods are generally better. But since you have it already- you can make it safe. (And redwood is moisture tolerant- ahh wouldnt it be nice to be able to use teak!)

And Chamelion man, CP isnt trying to be mean. He is trying to keep you from offering a guess that will actually harm someones snake- if not outright kill it. You would feel HORRIBLE if someone followed bad advice that was yours and their pet died or was hospitilized for it, right? He is just trying to keep you from having to go through that. You mean well, we know! You are learning and kind enough to try to make new people feel welcome by answering unanswered posts. Its Ok not to have all the answers.
I sure dont...
(even when I sound like I do- I learn new stuff every day. The more ya know, the more ya know you dont know.)

I would use a clear water based poly urethane...totally encapsulating the wood and giving it a plastic / smooth coat. Even Oil based urethane would work but takes longer to dry and gas off. The water based products dry in hours.
