Here are some blueprints for a large snake cage you can easily make yourself!

I hope this helps for all of you who would like to attempt to make a cage yourself but do not know where to start. You can do it!!! I’m a 31-year-old mother of two boys and a full time secretary. If I can do it, you can!!!! And as soon as I finish mine I’ll be sure to post pictures. If anyone has any questions or suggestions to improve on this please let me know. I’d love to hear them!!!!

I just designed a 6’L x 4’H x 2’D cage for my boa that I am in the process of building. Here is a picture of the blueprints that I made up for it. I hope it’s clear.

Instead of wood I found a web site where I could order 1/4 inch polypropylene sheet. www.totalplastics.com
I bought 3 poly-sheets at 48" x 96" size. all 3 sheets cost about $185. They even shipped them to me for less than $25! I spent another $35 on 1/8 inch plexi-glass for the front sliding doors. $20 for the track molding for the doors. $15 for locking caster wheels. $5 for hardware (I used metal corner brackets for reinforcement and drywall screws) $5 for sealant to seal all the corners after I screwed them all together. And lastly but possibly the most important, $3 for a lock for the doors.

The wood looking pieces that you see in the blue prints are actually PVC pipes that I covered with the tile grout/cement type mixture that I’ve seen on these forums for lizard cages. I wanted my cage to look as realistic as possible. I also wanted her to have climbing areas/perches and also to have some rough things to rub around on for shedding.

Heating/lighting I simply cut out 3 holes in the top, screened them in and put my lamps on top. If you want you could also put heat tape on one of the shelves for an extra warm basking spot. Just drill a small hole in the back for the cord. I’m waiting to see how even my heat is with just the lamps before I do that.

I decided to use polypropylene instead of wood for my cage after looking at cages from www.monster-cages.com. I loved the idea of the lightweight material and I was going to buy one of theirs when I realized that I should be able to make one myself if I could find the material. I searched alot of places and this plastic site was the cheapest I found. But you could just as easily make this cage using plywood or MDF if you choose. I would highly recommend sealing it, however, with marine laquer to make it waterproof.

Looks good. You may want to think about the width of the boards. It will throw your mentions off if your not careful. I did the same exact thing as you did with the drawing. I went to build the cage and the decisions were off. I drew everything pencil lined on the blue prints and not the actual width of the board. But with a few trims it turned out nice.

Thanks for the advice on the board width. I will try to keep that in mind. Thankfully, I have a husband who was MaGyver’s mentor. That man can build anything. He will oversee what I’m doing, I’m sure, whether I want the help or not.

as far as space for it, it will be in the basement. I love my snakes dearly, but I’m looking forward to moving them out of my bedroom. Since both my sister-in-law and my mother-in-law is terrified of them it’s either the bedroom or the basement. And I’m sure as hell not putting that size cage in my bedroom.

Oh, and one other thing I forgot to mention is that I am planning on having some way to clip/fasten the water tub in because I’ve had friends who tried that design and the snake figured out how to get his nose under the tub and crawled right out of the cage. They are smart little buggers!!!

But you know, at leas I know how to get rid of my in-laws if I want them out of my house. Hey, ladies, have you seen my boa, Violet, lately???? I just can’t understand why my mother-in-law thinks I’m odd.

I’m going to have to bookmark that website. May have to order some of that sometime. It would work SO much better than wood. Thanks.

wood works great also just get a pondliner. we use mdf board.

all kinds of stuff works. but i like wood better it gives a little more privacy and is easier to cut.

to cut plexi most places like menards and homedepot will do it for you if you have the measurements or you can score it really well and snap it.

I have made all my cages in the past using plywood and mdf. I like working with both but the downside has always been that they are heavy and not waterproof without sealing. The polypropylene sheet that I found is 1/3 the weight but just as solid. It is not see through so they still have the privacy. Thats why I made the bottom shelf only 12 inches high because she can hide under it, too.
GAPisces--to answer your questions--yes, it is 100% waterproof. That is one of the pros. I used my band saw with a very thin blade. I forget what size it was. But I know it was a thin one. It’s very easy to cut. Plexi-glass I got at a local hardware store. They cut it for me, too. I tried our local Lowe’s and Home Depot and they didnt carry it. I thought it was odd but they said that most local mom and pop hardware stores will, and they did. You could also try a window or glass specialty store. The sales people might try to get you to go lighter weight and thinner plexi-glass. Don’t do it. It won’t be as sturdy and you will regret it in the long run.

Oh yeah, www.totalplastics.com is awesome. Theyre prices are the best. And I am so happy with the polypropylene sheets. It might not be as easy as just running down to the local hardware store, but it’s really worth it for the portability and waterproof part of having such a large cage. I have even thought of making custom cages for people if this one turns out as I hope. So far its looking great. I cant wait to finish it and have pictures up.

Here are some blueprints for a large snake cage you can easily make yourself!

the cage with the monitor is 4.5H 44.5 sq feet. roughly 6.5 by 6.5 it is a corner so you can’t realy do length by width. the water bowl in there is 6’x3’x14" the two back pieces of wood are 7 feet. but the square footage is 44.5 sqft

the snake cage is 450 gallons. roughly 5Hx 4Lx 4W it is a corner cage also so square fottage is more important and it is 14 sqft. the snake in my first post is 7+ feet the monitor is 4+ feet

ther is the water bowl

and there i am in the cage

you make the space when your animals out grow your apt. we just put cup holders on the snake cage since we don’t have room for an end table. the snake cage is 14" from touching our ceiling.
