 Cage size question..

Hello..
im thinking about ordering a cage from boapile plastics..
i was gunna get a 6x2 but i dont know about the height ither 11.5 or 17.5
which height is best..?
speck doesnt climb much so he wouldnt really use the extra height..
would it be ok if i just got the 11.5?
sorry for all the questions..

I know a lot of people use 11.5" without a problem, but if your boa is very large a taller cage may make it more convenient for you to remove her from the cage. Also, i’ve heard that taller cages are better for breeding in (so theres enough headspace for both the male and the female when they’re together. Hope this helps!

lol, well then i think 11.5 would be fine! we have a large female and opted for the 17.5 model to help us get her in and out more easily, but with a less bulky male i don’t think it’ll ever be problem.

i would get the 17.5, i mean the 11.5 gives him absolutely NO climbing space. thats like you haveing 6 foot cielings throughout your house. and remember boas do like to climb sometimes

i think im gunna get a 5’ 2’ 17.5"
reason is because i take him out for like 2 houres a day so he is out all the time..
plus im gunna put lots of things for him to do in ther so he dont get boared like branches, decorations and stuff like that
would that be ok..

I have both sizes (height wise) of the Boaphile plastic enclosures. I’d say go with the 17" height, because when he gets big, it is difficult or impossible to remove larger hides while they are in them with the shorter ones. This is the voice of experience.

a 5’2’17.5" would be adequete for a male, i believe. we house our male in that sized cage, hes 2 and currently 3.5 feet and it is plenty of room for him, and leaves plenty of room for him to grow. Of course, bigger is always better if you have the room and can afford it.

yes but i take him out all the time...for like 2 hours a day..as with all my snakes they are always held..
and when i put them back they dont wanna go back in so i let them stay out untill they decide to go in..
so a 5 foot i think is ok im just makeing sure..

they don’t want to go back because they are not happy in their cage. my boa gets handled all the time but as soon as she gets near the cage she goes in with out a problem. remember boas are nocturnal so they will want to be out or exercise at night probably when you are a sleep. mine wakes me up around 11:00pm-2:00 am crawling all over her cage. especially on the plexi glass in front.

just do what you can to try and keep the snake happy/healthy and active.

her back end is on the top shelf, wedged between the log and the wall of the cage. sometimes she just scales up the plexiglass from the bottom to the top of the cage. i wish i could build her one taller so she couldn’t reach the top from the ground. oh well perhaps when we move she can have a bigger enclosure.

i feed in the cage. i also go in the cage all the time. so she never knows when she is being fed/ being taken out /or having her cage cleaned. i also have a good pair of welding gloves for when she seems a little fiestier than normal or hungry.

the blue ones are usually for the snake.

Quick quistion for you boa kid? The whole feeding in the enclosure thing, do you have any first hand experience? I have noticed nothing but a stronger feeding response when I feed my snake in his enclosure because he feels secure. You shouldn’t have a promblem as long as you dont feed live and you don’t smell like a potential prey item when entering the enclosure. My boa has been eating in his cage for 7 months and I havn’t really noticed an agression promblem. Another reason it can cause them to bite more in the enclosure is if you don’t open the enclosure execpt when feeding.

Boa Kid, I would go with the taller tank if there is not much more in price. I am sure you are not planning on breeding and like everyone said, it will be much easier to take him out once he gets big. I have a 6x2x2 for my boa and she loves it. Plus I do not plan on breeding so for display purposes it is better to have the higher cage. I got mine from Animal Plastics. They have great cages and very good prices.

I think that will turn out to be a really nice enclosure The glass shouldn’t be too skinny. They are strong muscular snakes. I think if it really layed into the glass it could break it but I’m not sure. Make sure you get a lock and key for it! They can slide them open easily.
