 New Sand Boa

Hey everyone, this is my first snake. Im so happy, it took years to get my dad to say yes but he finally did after I won 1st in the Herp section in the state finals of science olympiad. Anyway, shes really pretty and calm. I would have waited to feed her, but the store hadn’t fed her in a week and shes still young so I went ahead and fed her 3 pinkies (cause they’re tiny and they didnt have larger mice). What stage of mouse would be best for her? She’s about 16 inches STV but Im not sure how wide, I forgot and dont want to disturb her.

Sydney

This is my first snake so Im still learning the basics... I think its a girl cause of the really small/nonexisting spurs by her vent. I held another at petco and I could easily see the spurs. So do you think I have a female? Also, her tail is pretty small. I really like her and want to give her the best, so any advice or websites you know of, please do post. Its funny, everyone, even people scared of snakes, seem to want to pet or hold her.

SHe/he? is a looker! I can’t tell by the pics if its a boy or girl...sorry. But my girl is eating 2 fuzzies every 5 days and she is 16 and 3/4 long if thats any help. Are you feeding live or frozen/thaw? It is easy to find frozen more than live is why I asked. And if you google the sand boa you can find tons of sites that are good for beginners. Also the people on here kick butt and are very helpfull.
btw, fuzzie = just fuzz no fur mouse? is that how to explain it? the next step up from a pinky.
P.S. Congrats on the 1st place win! The color is nice and bright!!

Thanks! Im just gonna call it a girl, even if its not. yeah I know the stages of mice and everything so you dont need to explain. I got the last two fuzzies at the other store. I feed frozen, they do sell live, and I might feed a live one on special occasions. How big should she be before I start feeding hoppers? We’re going to a reptile show next month, so we’ll stock up on frozen mice. How long do f/t mice last in the freezer?

I have no idea how long they last...I never have the frozen for long. With 12 snakes all eating different sizes its hard to stock up. I would stay with fuzzies for a bit. Lou is about the size of yours and she can’t get a hopper down {or won’t, shes picky} yet. You have to watch also that you do not over feed. I had this problem with Lou. She will eat anytime I put a fuzzie in front of her. When the vet checked her she was overweight. I never power feed. So the vet said to back her down to once a week for a bit and that did the trick. Sand boas are funny little guys and can be great pets.
I asked my brother about the frozen and he says if you vaccumme seal or use freezer bags they should be good for a few months. Hope this helps. And again her color is real nice. I can’t stop looking at her pics lol!

Beautiful colors, patterns, and the best personality I’ve ever seen. Cant wait till the weekend, my friends are coming over to see her. And I cant wait for the reptile show next month... I have a 90 gallon tank with nothing in it... and a lot of money from the fish and liverock that were in it... thats a bad combination lol....

Be carefull on how big of a tank you put snakes in. Sometimes they stress with to much room. Kinda funny since in the wild they have no glass! I want another snake but not sure what. I am torn between the Beauty snake and a Dumeril. I have to wait till I have money first! Then I have to reserch the breeds and get the set ups. You can find tons of people on here that are good on giving solid advice, then you have some that have no clue. Just don’t take anyones word to the bank. If the idea seems good reserch it.

Yeah I wasnt going to put a snake in there... at least I dont think... lol... I have her in a tub right now, about 25-30 gallons maybe? I always wondered about reptiles that are stressed by too much space. Are they born in caves cut into 20 gallon blocks in the wild? oh well... haha... Im also wondering about what my next addition is going to be. I dunno if I’ll be allowed to get another snake for awhile but if I do, I might just get another sand boa. Can you think of any names for Sydney? I dont think she looks like a Sydney...

As for names heres my list:
Kraven -vampire movie
Walker (he makes a figure 8 out of his body and "walks")
Kah- the jungle book
Ivy- bat man’s poision ivy
Echo- my sons war movie
Spike- my son again
Lou -was Louie till we had her probed...another vampire name
Lucian-warewolf
Mater-cars...yep my son again
Morticia- as in the Adam’s family
Tiny-her head is small
Julian-King Julian from Madagasscar
Buddy-my wifes largest ball and her tv buddie
I hope I got everyone. As for another snake, I think a rosy or a ball is fine but the red tail is a bit big for a beginner. They are good pets but get kinda big and need a good size space. Your mom may not go for that! The rosy is something like a sand boa but has some different needs. The ball is easy and a good starter also. They have good attitudes and don’t need to much extra work.

Thanks! sorry alienboa I didnt see your post before mine. I got her from a local petstore for $60, on sale. I had thought about the name Echo before I got a snake, but forgot it along with others the next day. Im saving that for a different snake, probably a thinner, lighter colored one. Still thinking...
