 2 week-old dums are dying!

Anastasia finally gave birth to 17 healthy babies 2 weeks ago! They have all been offered first meals. Not surprising, they all declined. They have access to clean H20 and the temp. is kept at 90 during the day and 75-80 at night..

In the past couple of days, 4 have died.

I was told pine shavings are toxic and that is what was in their tubs. So, I gave the surviving a 10 minute soak in warm H20 and cleaned out the tubs with alcohol and replaced the shavings with paper. I hope this was the problem but if anyone has any other ideas or suggestions I would really appreciate them. My heart is breaking!

I would have them on damp paper towels to keep up their humidity. And I assume you have a small dish of water too? What is the Humidity in the tubs?

Try to offer another meal, maybe in a small paper bag in each of their tubs. This is gonna sound gross, but try tearing the skin on the F/T pinkies head a little bit to stimulate feeding response too. Put the snake in the bag with the pinkie, and leave em be for at least an hour.

I hope you rinsed the tubs after the alcohol too.

There often is a mortality rate in neonates from what Ive read. I’m sorry you’ve lost 4.

I would use aspen bedding. I would also try live mice if they wont eat f/t. That way they atleast have food in them. Then from there you can switch them to f/t food.

Why did you clean out your cages with alcohol? I always use bleach... Also, you should have kept the babies on moist paper towel until their first sheds. I can bet you anything that’s why they are dying. Try offering live hoppers/fuzzies until you can get them switched over to F/T.
