 Kenyan Sand Boa?

I have been doing some research(by some i mean a little, just started getting into snakes)

Anyways I was wondering if they need anything special for humidity?

And what size enclosure do you find works for both male and female?

Thanks in advance

Sand Boas DO NOT need humidity. They are used to dry climates, meaning you will only need a Under Tank Heater to keep the heat up and that is it. You will want two digital thermometers that read the temperature and humidity, which should be VERY low, for each side of the cage (meaning hot side and cool side). Two hides, one for each side as well as a shallow water dish.

Both can be kept in a 20 gallon long without any problems. Males tend to get smaller than females as well.

Thanks for the reply. I tried searching for info about their humidity needs and i got to different answers some saying they need humidity and some saying they don’t.

God I hate where i live the only thermometers they sell around here are the no good stick on ones.

I have read that they are pretty docile snakes,is this true?

and one more question can they be kept on sand?

sorry for all the questions I like to make sure I have info from a few sources lol

I actually don’t own Sand Boas but I know people that do and their needs are much different than those of Rosy Boas which is what I keep.

Here is a reputable caresheet by a Breeder I know well
Link

You can get digital thermometers at Walmart for $6. Don’t get the stick on ones, those are junk.

Yes, they are docile snakes. I have hardly EVER heard anyone say being bit by one and some people keep them on sand but in my opinion, I wouldn’t. If you decide to, make sure you keep it dry and take them out while feeding so the sand doesn’t get into their mouths. It can cause some problems.

 Kenyan Sand Boa?

All of my sand boas are very docile. The females are most certainly bigger than the males. My early ’08 male is about 1/4 the size of my mid ’08 female and about 1/2 to 1/3 the size of my late ’08 female. I keep mine half on sand and half Aspen. I put the water in the Aspen so the sand doesn’t get wet. The UTH is on the side with sand. The don’t need hidesbis you have them in loose substrate as they burrow naturally and are rarely ever on the top. I feed all of my snakes in a separate place (a rubbermaid tub) so there is no risk for impaction. I love these snakes. They are great beginners. No humidity requirements other than just low, and heating is easy. Just make sure you have a way to regulate it so it doesn’t get too hot.

a standard 29 has the same base as a 20long, so it would be fine. The snake won’t use the upper part but if you already have the tank use it. The floor space will be the same.

Thanks that helps a bunch.

One more thing would it be ok if I keep it on sand?but of course feed it in a feeding tub or something?

If it all makes it unsafe for the snake i won’t risk it

yes you can keep it on sand. just make sure the water dish doesn’t get the sand all wet and hard. they don’t need a big water dish just a small one. they will not soak in it at all, they just need to drink every now and then. sand is perfectly fine though, just feed in a separate container to avoid any ingestion of it to be on the safe side.

feel free to ask any other questions.

o and heres a few pics of my guys. I need to get some knew ones to show the size difference between them...maybe i’ll do that tomorrow :D
Male (normal), Roger.

Female (normal), Hermione

Female (anery), Francine.

if given enough room it is possible, but snakes in general are solitary animals and only come together for breeding. However many people have been successful with keeping females that are similar is size together with little to no problems. its not generally recommended though, because it can cause unneeded stress on the animals.

Well I thought it was wrong because I have never heard of any species of snake being able to live together unless they were a breeding pair.

I have to say, I don’t have a sand boa anymore(due to family issues) but I don’t agree with using sand. It can get stuck in between their scales and irritate them, or if it’s dusty, it can get in their airways and give them an RI.
Other than that, it seems about right.
