If he’s shedding, then that’s why. He might also have something stuck in his nostril, which he’s trying to clean out. Ironically, if that’s what’s happening, what he’s trying to clean out is probably sand. I’d switch substrates soon if you want him to stay healthy. Sand is bad for the nose and if you feed them on it it’s bad for the intestines. I know, they go on sand all the time in the wild, but they don’t live on it 24/7. It’s like the difference between letting your kid play in a sandbox versus giving him a sandbox instead of a bed. Even aspen or cyprus are better than sand, although CareFresh or paper are even better. If he sheds, that’s all it was. If it’s the sand inhalation, he’ll probably get it out on his own as soon as you get the stuff out of his cage, and he’ll probably be okay, but watch his nose for bubbles in case the irritation triggered a respiratory infection. And make sure the air in his cage is warm, obviously.

Newspaper is great. If you’re comfortable with it, you’ll save both you and your snake a lot of hassle.

Mine stuck his head in the sand because he was tring to burrow, one of their natural traits in the wild. He gave up eventually after realizing that the dirt I have in the aquarium was to compacted to dig any further[Image][/Image]
