Can you ID this snake I caught?

Hi... brand new here. We caught this little guy (aprox 2 ft. long) in our driveway a few days ago. We live in the bay area (near San Jose), California.

Guessing it’s a Pacific Gopher. Can anyone tell for sure?

Thanks!

Come on people!!! He caught this snake in Californina. That is a gopher snake. I am not too good with distinguishing the ssp. of gopher but the only gopher from that area where you caught him is the Pacific Gopher.

it is not a bullsnake.
it is a pacific gopher. the only other pituophis that ranges even close to san jose is the great basin gopher. it is 100% a pacific gopher. Pituophis c. catenifer.

Thanks all... I’ll go with Pacific Gopher for now. We’ll try to keep him as a pet for a while and see how he does... he’s eating well, digging and rearranging his substrate in interesting ways, and seems to me (as a novice) pretty healthy and happy. I appreciate these forums, I’m learning a lot!

Thats a nice looking snake, being in the UK we only have 3 native snakes, and none of them we are leggaly allowed to capture and take home as pets.
Saying that there are some escaped Aesculapian snakes (rat snake) that escaped from a zoo in north wales, they havnt spread to far but i dont know what the law says about taking one as a pet if you find it! however even if it were ok, i wouldnt bother as they grow quite large and i want a small snake as a pet

Bull snakes do not live in Western California. Gopher snakes do, specifically Pacific Gophers in the San Jose’ area. Truth be known, there isn’t much difference between Bulls and Gophers - mostly just the names. Bulls are found in the central U.S., reaching as far west as Arizona and Nevada, but I have never heard of a Bull Snake being found in Western California.

I am going with Pacific Gopher as well - even though the thread is old.

Thanks to you all... our snake continues to do well, now nearly a year later...

Today we found another of the same species (we’re calling it a Pacific Gopher, despite the controversy above). Trying to decide if we keep the new one too.
