Breeders of greyband kingsnakes, for one. These neonates are often difficult to get started on pinks, as they prefer fence lizards, so if one rubs the scent of a fence lizard on the pink the baby snake can be induced to eat rodent. It is not necessary to kill the lizard, just use it for scenting.

I keep them as pets as well as to scent pinks when I have baby mountain kings who may be reluctant to eat rodents. They are common in the Sierra Nevada foothills, too, but may seem exotic to someone living out of state. It’s sort of like bull snakes; very common in their local native habitat but exotic to people living elsewhere.

ya, I know what you mean, cause I know people keep anoles and five lined skinks too, but that seems more reasonable than a fence lizard, cause they at least look nice.......haha, are they easy to tame?

Mine are not tame, but they are used to me. They will scuttle for cover when I do things in their enclosure but not in a big panic. I like my fencies but I don’t expect them to be tame. I do have one big female who will let me pick her up, though. If one provides a good life for the fencies and removes all the ticks and other parasites from them, they will plump up and be quite pretty in their own right. If they feel safe they will come out from cover and do interesting things, like courtship rituals, mating, and so forth. I have some cb babies that are closer to being tame.

My wc gopher snake Gomez is tame. She ate live pinks from my hand the very day I brought her home. I think snakes are smarter than lizards; at least they seem calmer and less flighty. Even my wc California king is more tame. In fact, all of my 13 snakes are tamer than my fencies.

Check out the fence lizard forum here. Many people there do have tame fencies.

Lizards are the smarter of the two for being flighty!

Looking at things from that viewpoint, I would have to agree. It’s really like comparing dogs and cats; they are both intelligent but in different ways.

I thought the snakes were smarter because when they want to hide they do a really good job of that, whereas the lizards will often hide in a place I can still see them. They seem to think if they can’t see me, I can’t see them, either, whereas the snakes will jam themselves into such tight crevices they become almost invisible.
