Bull snake in need of rescue.

Along with a ball python needing rescued, this bull snake is wild caught(that i do not agree with,) living in sand with sand in it’s water dish, rocks to hide under, and nothing more, well a heat lamp but it’s tiny. I need to know how to completely set up this snake. I’ve taken the libery in buying about 60 dollars worth of supplies for these two snakes that aren’t even mine, so substrate being used, humdity and heat level, and any other helpful information would be really, really, REALLY appreciated

check the care sheets on this site for info. how long has the bull been captive? if it’s not long term, i would highly recommend returning it to the wild.

Newspaper might work fine, as long as you use multiple layers so it can go underneath. Even with hide boxes, they like to squeeze around under stuff and explore. Might not even be exploring, since he’s WC, might just be flat-out hiding. It’s better than sand, anyway.

If you’re not feeding him on it, Carefresh bedding is great stuff. it’s heat-sterilized and has no splinters. Wood shavings sometimes do. If you do want to go with wood shavings, again, don’t feed him on them, and stick with aspen or cyprus. Never pine or cedar. I’ll admit I’ve never tried cyprus, but I’ve had some splinter issues with aspen, so I’m not as big a fan of it as most. But, if you can’t find carefresh, it’s a feasible option. I suggest a substrate that he can burrow in, coupled with an undertank heater under one end, because you provide a hige choice of temperatures that way.

Minimum temperature in the 70s, with the heat pad going 24/7. Regular fluorescent lighting is fine to seperate day and night. They’re diurnal. You can use a heat lamp over the warm end if you want, and he might spend more time out that way, but otherwise he’ll be perfectly happy spending a lot of time buried.

For humidity, you shouldn’t need to add any at all. For the ball python, especially this time of year, yes, but bullsnakes do very well dry. No point in encouraging bacterial growth if you don’t have to.
