Help I have a wild caught gopher snake that has not ate in over 4 months. I’ve had him 8 months and he ate about every 10 days the first 4 months then just stopped eating, I didnt change anything. He is still active and looks ok but Im worried that its been so long.

Help How big is he? Snakes will some times turn down meals for months on end once the weather starts to cool down.

Help Four months is pretty long. If you’re sure temperatures haven’t changed then something internal is going on. Since he’s wildcaught, my guess is parasites. Was he ever checked? You don’t even need to bring the snake in for the check, just a stool sample. Usually costs about 20 bucks and you can weigh the snake to find out how much medicine to give them. The other main possibilities are that
a. the temperatures at night are dropping more than you think they are, and
b. there isn’t enough light this time if year. often people who get by with minimal cage illumination during the summer discover that the same light setup triggers winter depression when there isn’t much else coming in through the windows.

Help He’s an adult wild caught........he needs to brumate. This is something that needs to be taken into consideration when you take in a wc. Some years they dont want to brumate and other years they do. You need to be prepared for it. If they go off feed for 4 months and are not cooled then they will use up all their stored reserves and begin to loose weight. If you brumate them then they loose very little if any weight and once they warm back up (2-3 months later) they go back to normal.
