Actually, the Eastern Indigo snake is the largest snake in North America. I believe the Black Rat is second in length, but the Pines are heavier than Black Rats and almost as long.

 You are all wrong...

The Highway 277 Locality Monster Bulls are currently North Americass longest snakes with record lengths of over 8.5 ft.
Eastern Indigos are 2nd as far as length.

Hadn’t heard that, but I won’t argue. Do you have any links or pics? I will try to google them, but would love to know a little more about them.

Thanks for the information!

My fault! The pitupphis family sports some of North America’s largest non-venomous snakes. The Northern Pine & Bull snake are larger then the southern. The southern does get large & very heavy bodied. Sorry!

Yet people in places where these snakes live wild still yammer for "no pet snakes over six feet" laws! It’s funny how big a secret large North American constrictors are, even within their natural ranges.

Sorry gang, Eastern Indigos ON AVERAGE are still the largest snake in North America.

And this excerpt from Wikipedia....

Quote:

The indigo snake, a member of the colubrid family of snakes, is the (unofficially) longest snake in North America, with the longest recorded specimen measuring 9.2 feet (2.8m), but it is not the longest of its genus. The yellowtail cribo, also of the genus Drymarchon, has been known to reach 10 feet (3.05m) in length, but it is located in Central and South America and is dwarfed by the anaconda, the largest (longest and heaviest) known snake in the Americas.

Had to stand up for my beloved Indigos!!

Wikipedia is one of the most unreliable resources on the net...

Anaconda is well know to not be the longest.

Also, if you want to get technical, the largest nonvenomous snake in North America is by far, the burmese python.

Indigos are reportedly the largest NATIVE snake, but like I said, I have heard several very credible of coachwhips that dwarf indigos being found.
