How did my gopher snake survive?

I lost my gopher snake over a year 1/2 ago. Yesterday, he reappeared after spring cleaning of the linen closet. He is now in a tank and drinking water. He has lost weight and was emaciated. We gave him a hopper but he is not interested....yet. Meanwhile, my girlfriend has named the hopper and is feeding it!!!

How did the snake survive without food and water for over a year and how should we rehab him? Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Must have found a cool spot and hibernated. If their body temperatue is low enough they don’t burn as many calories.
Keep him warm, with brightly lit days, and keep offering food a couple times a week. He should come around.

How did my gopher snake survive 1-1/2 Years?

Thanks for your comments. He ate his first hopper four days after we recaptured him. Yesterday, he took two mice and seems content. We have named him "LUCKY". Also, he was recaptured after 1-1/2 years. He must have spent all that time hibernating in the linen closet. AMAZING!
