 Bull snake substrates

Hello,
This summer I need to do some work to get a bull snake display set up for a large bull snake. It is a 75 gallon tank and I need to make it look realistic since it is in a nature center. Any thoughts to a good substrate to use. I would like to switch from pine substrate because he seems to be poked by it often. I was wondering about ecoearth dryed. Ideas and pictures would be great. Thank you.

Pine’s a bad choice anyway; it’s mildy toxic. Aspen and cyprus are better for snakes, although personally I’m not crazy about either. For snakes that are wiling to burrow, I like Carefresh. No splinters to worry about.

it would be fine to put in a hide as a moist spot (like a rotting log in the wild).

My only real problem with it would be that it would harder for you to monitor for mites and things. I’m not sure how well it works when it’s dry though. I’ve only seen it used in humid forest setups. If it’s not moist it might either be too dusty or so hard that it defeats a major point of using it.
Eco Earth is opne of those things like aspen that everybody except me seems to love. I’ve bought one block of EE in my life and never went back. I figure if I have to clean turds out of water bowls anyway I might as well look at them while I’m doing it so I can gauge if everything is normal internally, but when the water itself is all black and muddy from substrate that’s kind of hard to do.
