 This One Was Easy . . .

Somewhere in the Great Basin . . .

Life can be kind of rough here . . .

As an old Eagle Scout, I wind up kind of miffed when I find signs of other humans--who obviously don’t share my values--who’ve trashed the environment by dumping one item or another. As a herper, though, I know from my childhood that treasures can often be found lurking in such places, which tempers my indignation a bit . . .

This guy was under the first piece of a carpet remnant I overturned . . .

Unfortunately, I hadn’t had time to decide what to do if I did catch a snake, and when I turned the carpet over and saw "him" (I’m reasonably sure on that one), he went into a full-blown "I’m a rattlesnake!" impersonation. I bagged him instead of taking what would’ve been some superb shots . . . Twenty minutes later, after walking down the hill pictured above, I released him back to his carpeted home . . . There was none of the bluff and bluster from earlier; he knew I was onto him, and he just wanted to hide . . . Here’s another shot that shows his pattern nicely . . .

And yes, that’s a black widow spider next to him . . . Here’s a close-up . . .

Y’all be careful where you’re putting your hands when your out there in the fields, okay?

LOL! I hear you!
A few years ago while hiking around in the north fork river canyon of the Mokelumne, I got sleepy and laid down on some old foam padding we used at our campsite. After a nice hour long nap I woke up to find that a big fat rattlesnake had stretched out the length of my right leg, and also decided to nap. We looked at each other, like OH Excuse Me! and I stayed still while he slowly crawled away, occasionally looking back at me in puzzlement. After he was a safe distance away I got up and looked under the old foam padding. It was full of old mouse nests. I had been napping on his feeding station!

So, be careful where you sleep, too! I carry a little hammock now; will never sleep on the ground again!
