 Temperature question

okay guys, so i am not sure i you remember this, but i posted awhile ago saying that i am going to be purchasing a louisiana pine snake. i plan on purchasing several with an intent on breeding them. so i have been thoroughly researching cooling temps, etc. and i realized that it may be hard to keep the temperature constant, so i was looking for something that could keep a constant temp, and i cant seem to come up with anything
so i was hoping you guys could point me in the right direction so that i can find something that can control temp.
thank you! :)

Don’t Make Rocket Science out of This . . .

Snakes aren’t anywhere near as high maintenance as lizards (which is why I don’t do lizards even though I like ’em).

Either a regular under tank heater for each set-up, or heating tape (Lowe’s, Home Depot, or even Wal-Mart) with a thermostat is adequate to maintain temperatures . . .

I brumate my snakes in an unheated closet that borders on the outside of my townhouse apartment. The temp gets down into the low 60’s, which is just fine. Note your Louisiana temperatures are for outside air temperature; Snakes will conceal themselves beneath the ground, and they probably don’t get that low all that often . . .

I buy my substrate (aspen or Repti-Bark) in the big bulk bags at Petco or Pet-Smart, and I watch for sales . . .

I raise my mice in pine bedding (also purchased in bulk) in 10-gallon aquariums. I supplement those with a few Gourmet Rodent purchases at Petco; I know there are cheaper sources for frozen rodents on-line. If I were to get really involved in raising Pits, I’d probably get a set-up to raise rats, and I’m pretty sure I could sell the surplus with them (no way with mice) if I got really into it. But rats smell way worse than mice....

That’s about all on my end . . .

I finally figured out where I can brumate my snakes; in the mouse RV! During the winter I keep the mouse RV in the low 50’s Fahrenheit, no higher than 60 degrees. The mice like the cool weather. This should work just fine for the snakes, too. Alas, this is a couple years in the future, as my snakes are still very young. But at least I have a solution now for a brumating location.

thanks! :) that helped me out a bunch- i was really confused. so it was a lot less complicated than i thought it was! oops!
sorry couple more questions-
1. when do you start to brumate the LA pines? (september?)
2. when do you place the pair together? (february/march maybe?)
3. how do you incubate the eggs?
and finally is it right to have 6 inches of substrate, or should there be more?

haha yeah! the lizard thing just didnt work out for me, i love them though. i tried it for several years, but eventually got sick of its diet, blegh! too complicated for me! so now i have moved on to snakes- parents arent too keen on the idea though b/c they think all snakes are venomous (which i tried to explain to them was wrong but they wouldnt listen to me!) :/
thanks for helping me!

 I’d Try . . .

Asking over on the Bull/Pine/Gopher section at kingsnake.com on that one . . . September seems too early for me (although my w/c gopher quit eating the end of August last year).

The time period isn’t critical; over on the corn snake forum it looks like everyone started around the first of December or so and went into March. Some started a little later; I went until the first week of April before putting Momma and Poppa together, so I’ve had eggs for about ten days now. Others already have eggs hatching . . .

The important thing is re-setting the snakes’ "biological system," that’s all . . .
