 What did I find?

I’ve always thought that the only snakes in our area were western hognose, garters, racers, rattlers, and common bullsnakes. I caught this little guy yesterday, and I was wondering if anyone knew anything about what he might be. I have caught my fair share of baby bullsnakes, and he looks nothing like them. Instead of a line on his head, he has a cool reddish design. And unlike the patches that run down the bullsnakes in our area, he is zig-zaggy. I just don’t know about him. If you’d like, I could try to take some better pics. Anyone know?

I’m leaning towards some sort of bull snake. The pattern is closer to that than anything else.

 Your Pictures Aren’t Real Clear . . .

I just clicked on where you live, and I think it’s unlikely a glossy snake would be that far north. Is a Great Plains Rat snake a possibility (anyone else feel free to chime in)?

Are the scales keeled or smooth? How about the belly? A prairie kingsnake also strikes me as possible, if you’re in the southeast portion of your stake . . .

Any chance it’s somebody’s escaped pet?

Last thought is a juvenile race, which is where I’d lay my money (not much though). They have patterns that differ significantly from adults . . .

I suspect it is a young racer. I took one out of a glue trap like that one. It will gradually loose that beautiful color pattern as it gets older. Pretty similar to the age color change of a black rat snake, but its just a young racer
