My Baby Striped Pacific Gopher Snake Zigzag

He arrived here on the 10th of September. I had forgotten how tiny babies are; he only weighed 16.2 grams, having been hatched August 9th. This photo is from the seller. Once he has had a few more meals and has gotten used to me I will post some more photos. He ate three big live pinks the day after arrival.

My plan in the future is to breed him to a couple of my other Pacifics. He is co-dominate stripe, which means half his offspring should be striped if he is bred to a blotched normal.

Let’s see a pic next to a piece of money or something, to get a better visual of the tininess.

Here he is next to a regular size Sharpie marking pen. I just took this picture, lifting off his hide to show him. Had to be quick, as he is full of pinks again. He ate four day old live pinks today. Soon he wont be so tiny! He already seems quite relaxed with me, although I am not disturbing him or handling him much, just mainly feeding him every few days and letting him grow.

It’s amazing how they can tame down even at that size.
What kind of monsters must our fingers look like to them?

This morning I changed his terra cotta saucer hide for a little Styrofoam lined cardboard hide, for the winter. When I lifted off the old hide he took umbrage that I was disturbing him, and he actually struck at me, and I actually flinched automatically, even though I have seen night-crawlers bigger than him! After I got his new hide installed I took him out for some gentle crawling from hand to hand and he remembered I am not some Hydra monster with multiple giant tentacles.

Yeah, they can do some loud hisses when they want to!
The styrofoam hide is an interesting idea.

I made the Styrofoam hide out of a small reptile shipping box by cutting the box in half, then cutting the Styrofoam to fit. One Box makes two hides, as they don’t have a floor, just roof and sides, and a small V shaped entrance hole. All my kings, as well as Zigzag, got these as they are little dudes. For my big beefy bulls and Pacifics I took soda flats and cut Styrofoam to fit that, to lay over their warm spot. My reasoning is that in the winter the UTH area will stay warmer especially in my cabin at night. So far it is working fine and I have even be able to turn down the thermostats to account for the increased efficiency.
