 I’m On This One, Occasionally . . .

Kingsnakes.com has a Bull, Python, and Gopher snake section along with just about everything else in the way of herp hobbying, including some scientific discussions that are way beyond my depth (one reason I hang here a bit; I’m a former secondary school teacher, not a college professor).

I’m not intimidated visiting over there, and I’ve gone to the mat a few times on the subject of evolution (and found some suport); it’s larger, however, and I find a smaller audience adequate. I wouldn’t hesitate to pop there if I had a question (I think it was JackAsp who received a bit of a rude reception when he posted a growth report on his pit; there are caustic sorts everywhere, but I haven’t had a post pulled here, which is comforting).

Here’s a link:

I like Reptilegeeks, although it is heavy on the more popular animals like ball pythons and boas, and assorted lizards and things. Not a lot of pituophis activity, which I find odd, as pituophis are one of the best species to keep! But it’s a nice socializing type site.

I have had many of my posts deleted at Kingsnake.com. I have read the rules and still get my posts deleted. Any links to anywhere is what does me in there. But for good information it is an excellent resource.

Link
FaunaClassifieds is another good site for all around reptile information.

I think the reason so little forum space is usually devoted to Pits is that they’re so hardy. You don’t have to scent their food with exotic prey items to trick them into eating mice. They can handle it if the room gets a little hot or cool. They’re fine with low humidity, which means they face fewer diseases than snakes that need more. There just aren’t as many Pit-specific rules, compared to ball pythons or whatever. And they’re so closely related to rats and corns and kings that most of the time people can cheat off what they know about the related genera. Also, because they do fine with no vertical space, they tend to wind up in large rack syatems rather than display cages. Now if it actually IS a truly large tub that they’re being kept in, I’m okay with that. But it means you probably won’t see as many complex habitats as you would for a more arboreal species. You’re not going to see guys who own 500 snakes, plus hatchlings, talking about getting ferret habitrails for their gopher snake.
BTW, I just moved Winkle into the 260G today, and that’s only because of his freakish-crazy growth rate, and I’ll be the first to admit that a 29" tall cage for even a LARGE a bull seems ridiculous! But it’s a little over twice the floorspace of his old cage; the height is just a side effect. I’ll have a picture thread up by next week. He only took a few hours to setle in, but I still want to tweak the setup a bit longer.

73X29X29. It’s one of those nylon-mesh reptariums, not an actual tank.

I have a couple of the aluminum screen reptile cages 24 in x 24 in by 48 in laid horizontally with the door as the roof. I use these as daytime activity areas for the bulls and gophers. They really enjoy getting out in the sun on the front porch. At night I bring them back in to their tubs as our nights are chilly, and also we have skunks and raccoons and even bears around here, and I’d be afraid some varmint might try to break into the cage. Nylon is too fragile for my situation, as I also have cats, although I do try to keep the cats out of the cage area during the day. I have a colony of fence lizards in one of these cages and they are in there 24/7. With the lizard cage I can pick up the whole affair and bring it in, as it is a light weight affair after I take out the water bowls.

My pits are still youngsters and have not attained adult size yet, so four feet long is working fine so far.

thank you everyone, its so true i cant find good forums anywhere other than this one. if i have a question i come here but i like reading other peoples info to and i have read everything on here. pits are great snakes, mine is so active it burrows climbs its everywhere. it funny to watch tho because they seem to be creatures of habit. He sleeps in the same place every night, he is awake most of the day burrowing and climbing he sits on his big basking rock on the hot side of the tank and then he goes to sleep at night behind the flower pot i put in there for him. Lately he has been sleeping in his cave tho because its getting quite cold in my room and there is a heating pad under it. he seems to have his own schedual tho.
