My New Santa Cruz Mts. Pacifics

The female:

The male:

These are a pair of 5 week old 09 Pacific gopher snakes from Shannon Brown. The parents are from the Santa Cruz Mts. They are not het for anything, just your basic Pacific. I got them yesterday at the Sacramento Reptile Show, after searching for hours for any Pacifics. There were hardly any pituophis in general, but about a zillion corn snakes and ball pythons.

Not breeding them with each other, I hope. I know there’s breeders who’ll insist that it’s harmless, but my northern pines were produced by someone who thought that. Besides losing Callisto to a very swift skin cancer at about age 6, which the vet who worked on her thought was genetic, and McBain to organ failure at 8.5, which another vet even after a biopsy thought was genetic (although other theories would also account for that latter one,) Callisto already had arthritis in two vertebrae and McBain in one, in the same exact area, and, even though I’d never used UV lighting on them because they were good winter eaters anyway, they each had one cataract by the time they died. Same eye, too. And that’s all at fairly early ages. It’s hard to look at healthy hatchlings and accurately predict how they’re going to be doing in 5 or 10 years, and even if you ask new owners of the offspring to keep in touch with you they probably won’t, or the information they give will be too hard to interpret (was the health issue the owner’s fault or the fault of genetics or what?) so it pays to be paranoid about recessives. Our snakes don’t have the "luxury" of getting eaten by a coyote at age 4. Not that your little shoelaces are suddenly going to start breeding right now as babies anyway, lol... or at least not very successfully...
So how many snakes does this bring you up to, now? Are Pits all you have?

No, I don’t plan to breed any of my snakes brother to sister. That is one of the reasons I have several unrelated pairs and singletons. I don’t think inbreeding is healthy whether it is snakes, mice, or people! I plan to breed Pacific to Pacific or pyro to pyro but outbreed, and have now assembled a good sized gene pool to work with.
So to answer your question on how many:
Pacifics:
Gonzo female
Zumbida and Lorenzo sister and brother
Zanta and Cruz sister and brother
Gomez female

Bulls:
Zoey and Alfonzo sister and brother ( not to be bred together ,either, will maybe look for another unrelated bull pair if I decide to breed them)

Pyro kings:
Zane, Zunchara and Dots brother and sisters
Mazar male unrelated

Cali king:
Snakezoid male just a pet no plans to breed him to anything

Since all my snakes are still quite young, any breeding plans are a few years in the future.
