Revised: How To Make A Rock wall

This thread will show you how to make a cheep but great 3D rock wall for almost any type of animal.

Supplies: 1. Foam Board (Home Depot/Lowe’s)-$10
2. Hot Glue (craft store)-$???
3. Tile Grout (Home Depot/Lowe’s)-$15
4. Bucket (around the house)-$???
5. Sharp Knife (Around the house-Kitchen)-$???
6. Rubber Gloves (Just about any were)-$3 for a 25 pack
7. Large space that can get slightly messy
8. News Paper (to cut down on mess)
9. Velcro (anywhere)-$???
10. Silicone

What You Do:
1. Cut a single piece of foam to fit in the back of the tank.
2. Cut ledges out of foam and arrange them where ever you like.
3. Hot Glue the ledges to the foam piece that fits into the back of the tank.
5. Wait for the hot glue to set.
6. Mix up some grout (first layer should be like milkshake thickness.
7. Using rubber gloves spread the grout over the foam, front and back.
8. Make sure the grout dries (24 hours)
9. Mix up second batch of grout, this should be slightly thicker than the last.
10. Wait for the second layer to dry (Don’t forget about the back!)
11. If everything is smooth then your good to go, but if it is not re coat (watery grout mixture)
12. Silicone the Velcro in two or three places at the top of the back foam piece.
13. After the silicone has set for the Velcro touching the rock wall, silicon matching pieces to the back of the glass.
14. Wait for the silicone to set and the smell to go away, and then put the rest of the furnishings in the tank, along with the animal. (it usually takes 24+ hours for the small to go)

Using the same technique you can make hides, waterfalls, and lots of other decorations for your tank.

Here are some pictures of the background, and hide that I made:

You can use any color of grout, and you don’t need to seal it with grout sealer. Colored grout eliminates painting.

I HOPE YOU ENJOYED MY THREAD AND LEARNED A LOT FROM IT> MAYBE YOU WILL EVEN MAKE ON SOMEDAY!

Hey Jake, I just thought of soemthing you should add to the "list" of things needed. This came to me while working on my shelving. I noticed that the back part of the shelves that gets glued to the backboard is sometimes curved, well to remedy this I used some fine grit sand paper to flatten it out. After doing this you get the nice uniform fit you need to get the shelving to fit flush against the backboard. Anyway, just wanted to let you know that now I gotta get back to work hehe.

u just filled in the gap with hot glue (i think i know what your talking about) but if not then iv found that a file works well for smothing off the edges, sometimes there are little bits hanging off.

What I mean is the back end part that glues to the wall sometimes has a rocking effect becuse of a curve... so if you want a smooth touch you need to shave that "hump" down so it sits firm instead of slightly rocking. Hope this helps clear up what Im tlakin about.

May I ask how you shaped the cave and the rock column on the bottom of tank. I am very interested in the how-to on that. If you don’t mind sharing. Very nice setup by the way.

No, Im not telling. HAHA just kidding, well for the column of rocks i cut out a bunch of little stones (rectangles that i rounded a bit) hot glued them in the shape you see and grouted them. for teh hide box i will have to draw it out, take a pic, and post it for you. Itss too hard to explain but pretty easy to make. Its well worth it too. I’ll post the pic within the next few days.

Jakemyster44 I’m glad you posted the directions how to make these walls. thank you.

Madwire, you’ve got some great looking backgrounds. What did you use to give it such artistic details?

I am trying to design a environment that looks like Mayan ruins. I haven’t purchased the grout yet; but is it possible to gunk the grout on and shape it? Do you let it dry and then carve it or do you carve it while its drying? Do you carve the foam board and then grout it?

One more thing. I am wanting to build the bottom 5.5 inches of my 24x18x24 exo terra into a fishtank. From the top down view, only 5 inches x 5 inches of water will be visible, the rest of the water is within a custom built tank with a foam board and easy to clean terrarium liner on top of that. The potted plants are inserted into square slots built into the custom aquarium. This gives plenty of room for the plants to grow and the fish in the bottom of the tank have plenty of room to run around. The fish water is filtered by a 304 submersible filter. The potted plants are removed easily for cleaning and the terrarium liner is just replaced.

My question is concerning custom walls for the exo.

I want to route the 304 filter to push water to the top of the exo terra tank. Then the water will fall in a little grove making a waterfall until it falls back into the 5 inch x 5 inch exposed aquarium below. My anoles think it is just a watering hole, but the fish below have 9.4 gallons of water and a cave diving environment. The aquarium is backlite underneath the anoles substrate. This allows it to be easily viewed from the front. No light is visible from the top down view.

What kind of sealant can i use to make my grout waterproof to allow for a waterfall to be built?

yeah u have tons of plans...

well carve it all out. what u described would be easier to do in pieces then hot glue into place... if u are doing a brick look use a wire and heat it up that makes fast clean lines but make sure they are deep and wide. or u can just smooth the grout a little then with a wire carve your bricks.. remember to do that on the last coat otherwise your work will disapear under the new grout.. aim for like 3 thick layers at least so it will hold up...

on mine I stuck it all together then carved the rocks. use pictures of natural formations for ideas.

sealant? I’ve heard polycrylic does well but I’ve seen setups made and sealed with silicone and it worked very well..

take your time with it and u should like it more in the end... better post pics too man that’s our only demand...have fun man

When looking at your pictures some of the ledges are layered so that the larger surface is on top and then directly underneath that there is smaller layers. Im assuming you did this for stability of the ledges? or was that just for looks.

great instructions by the way i think im going to make one this weekend for my leo :)

Yea, Madwire3, I downloaded a ton of Mayan photos and a few incan structures. This website http://archive.cyark.org/sites.php?v=media&p=tik&gclid=CLWsyZvvgpMCFQNlHgodc1mYyA#2 or click Link provides 3d photos of some structures. I will be using the Tikal - North Acropolis stairway to provide my Anoles with a looking glass into the aquarium below; however, this will reduce the aquarium portion from true 8.5 gallons to approx. 8 gallons.

the Mayan structures were built with lots of plateaus and flat surfaces for the lizards to crawl on. This will allow me to avoid having to create "natural" looking surfaces. These are very difficult to reproduce.

i plan to have lots of broken pieces of the temples to provide segue between the multiple structures on the walls of the Plaudarium. With the pictures you guys have provided in this post, it really shows me that anything! can be done in a Plaudarium/Terarrium/Vivarium.

I totally agree with you. I was thinking last night that the best way to build the structures will be using a block method and gluing them together. Carving it would be insane. I will be using 3 Polyblend grout colors: Itailian Straw (tan), moss (brown/green), and Bay Leaf (rustic gray). I will have an airbrush artist put the finishing touches on the Mayan Ruins.

I will take photos and write a step-by-step so that others can see. I figure this process will take me close to two weeks to finish. I’m still waiting on the tank in the mail. If you guys want a cheap exo terra, consider checking these guys out:
http://www.drsfostersmith.com/ or click Link

This is a pic of Ted (male) chasing Diamonback (female)

This is a close up of Ted. This guy is a fierce looking Brown anole. We captured them in Florida. I would recommend brown anoles over green anoles any day. These guys seem much more aggressive and intelligent (instinctual).

first yeah the added rocks under the slabs was .. well both support and cosmetic.. I wanted a way to add a little uphold but at the same time look good... the brownish red rock piece is in my blue tongue skinks cage " for a beardy later when the blue tongue skinks cage is complete.. they love it the bigger female climbs on it all the time the smaller just a little but boy does she love that hide.. she lys in there with her head poking out most the time unless I’m in the room then she crawls out.

if I was doing the temple thing I’d definitely do it in pieces. u can route a small hose through the foam and for a cleaner line for the hose to go in just hat something up like a big nail and let that creat a long dip for the hose to run... plan that part to the end idea of the temple.. save u some headaches later and who wants a hose showing after all the time u put into the piece. anyways I gotta get. oh and for the best tool I’ve used for cutting and carving get one of those long blade utility knifes... u can get disposible ones at homedepot for like a buck
