Safe to put into a cage?

Ok this is something all of you probably have no idea about but I need opinions...

Its a bone... of some sort most likely whale, found it on the beach of the pacific ocean near canada....

still working on getting all the sand out (its hollow but only like a quarter of an inch hollow. Just a small hollow hole through to the other end. DONT say its wood, We cut a peice off and its definately NOT wood of any sort. It is heavy and about 2ft long. We have compared it to other whale bone and it looks very similiar

But anyway... is it safe to put into a lizard cage???? How could I make it safe????

Any ideas suggestions, positive comments are welcome

Please if you have rude nasty unpolite comments or anything negative to say that does not relate with an answer please keep it to yourself. Just sweet simple answers I dont want a lecture about anything.

Thanks everyone!

Definately safe no doubt, i personally would find a way to permanently plug the holes in the ends.

I really dont think that bones are OK to put into cages. Unless its a dessert cage, but even then I wouldnt. I say no.

maybe use some type of sealent just in case. but i would think it woudl be ok. just make sure to bleach it or put it in oven at low temp for several hours. I often use the oven method if the piece is small enough or it it bigger i soak (in the tub) or spray with a bleach solution.

its fine its just a bone, you guys get carried away with disinfecting things just spray some bleach on it and wipe it down, I see people post pics of their dragons out in the yard on the sidewalk the grass and i dint see them disinfecting the area where they are letting them run around, i would say there is more germs and bacteria there then on a old bone that’s been in salt water or a piece of wood sitting in the sun. just wipe it down with bleach and it will be awesome in the cage. Ive used old bricks and wood and just but some bleach on them and my dragons are just fine, they are wild reptiles after all.

it reminds me of people who keep snakes and have them on super strict regular feeding schedules... I am sure in the wild that a rat comes along every tuesday at 3:27 PM... and the temp always stays at exact 89.235648 degrees F. Gotta love it. The only reason i soak is to kill any larval or eggs of insects just because i don’t want them in the cage.

I just want to be sure I can treat it as if it were wood....

I know about bleach solutions and baking and what not but I wasnt sure if I would be able to do the same with this... and sense it has been sitting in the house for 5 years if there really is anything dangerous in it.....

also kenyken, its not that just breifly passing by a untreted peice of wood is harmful, but being confined in a cage with it is were you run into problems.

It will be in a humid environment... most likely for my chinese water dragon... but up near the top near the heat not so much near the water itself....

Just so you’re warned:

Putting whalebone in herp cages can sometimes lead to a serious maintenance issue.

Prey comes in contact with it, and chemical reactions take place before the prey gets eaten, and the next thing you know your animal just isn’t acting the same any more.

First, they go off their feed.

Then, you find out why.

They’ve becomes fixated. The only thing they will eat is cetaceans.
