 Mixing sand and dirt

I’ve tried mixing sand and dirt together for my Savannah Monitor Lizard’s cage but the dirt kind of clumped together and seperated from the sand. It was regular top soil and although it was initially moist it still didn’t mix well when it dried. Any suggestions?

Contact Shiftylarry, he will be able to tell you what to do, I think he has a monitor.

Not sure what to tell you. I also use dirt/sand mixes for a few of my guys, but this has never happened to me.

It’s play sand, right? Have you tried raking it? What’s your ratio of sand to dirt?

 Mixing sand and dirt

This is not an exact science. You have to keep messing with it. The best source of dirt would be a dry creek bed, because the sand is a smaller grain and is less likely to clump up. If you’re making mixture from store bought materials, maybe try adding some moss to the mixture and shift the ratio to include more topsoil.

I used play sand and topsoil. I think the mixture was originally 50/50 or 30% soil and 70% sand....now it’s probably 85% sand because I kept taking out the clumps of dirt. As far as moss goes, are you referring to peat moss?
