New Raise Up Cage For Young Niles

I finished biulding this one a few days ago. It will house the young niles for a few months. I introduced them to the cage last night.
The cage has two of everything on opposite ends of the cage with hopes of eliminating the need for competition over territory. It measures 6x2x5 (lxwxh).
I’ve been leaving the windows in the room the cage is in open at night as the outside temperatures have been dropping into the mid forties. The cage temperatures have maintained a steady gradient of 78-135, the high being the basking areas of course. The basking lights are two 45 watt outdoor floods lower in the cage with a fifty at the top. The single higher basking areas’ temperature is around 120.
It holds humidity very well. There are vents above and below the center of the window behind the trim on the front panel. The vents are a series of one inch holes covered with fine screen mesh. I can open or close any number of them as needed in order to fine tune the temperature and humidity levels. All are open on the bottom and only two are open on top.
The inside of the upper portion of the cage is coated with three coats of exterior latex paint and finished with five coats of marine varnish. The bottom portion is lined with linileum.
Substrate is 14" deep and consists of a mixture of 35% pure clay, 35% sand and 30% topsoil from my yard. I ground the clay through some 1/8" hardware cloth and mixed it very thoroughly with the dirt and sand so it should not become too hard. I’ll be adding more silk plants to yhe lattice arch tomorrow to form a canopy above.

The critters were out and about already today.

Questions, comments, and critisizms are welcome.

Thanks

Roger

Monitors require pretty high surface temperatures for basking in order to properly metabolize nutrients. The basking temperatures for most monitor species should be within the ranges 130-150 F. I even have a large nile that uses a basking area of close to 160 F.

The surface temperature of those bulbs is only around 135, five degrees lower than the 140 F basking areas they regularly use. I have used other setups like this for a while and have never had a monitor burn its’ self.

Thanks for the compliment.

I know little about the monitor species...but that is a nice set-up, nice workmanship ...

Is that a typical residential window for the front ? I like that ... I have mulled around the idea of using something like that but I have an arboreal species and require more height .... like a shower door....

Always looking for new idea.

Nice Job.

Chris,

Yes it is a window from a house I remodeled last year. I have tons of them. I’m in the process of building some very large cages for some very large lizards, heh heh. I have enough of the windows to make the enclosures glass nearly all the way around.
