 New Boa Viv/ Bed

I am currently in the midst of building a loft bed ( just a bed with really long legs) and in the middle of planning it I got briliant idea. All I would have to do is run 2x4’s around the legs about 4’ up and run some around the bottom, then slap some plywood around those and I would have a decent size vivarium for my red tail boa until she hits about 7 feet. I am getting exited about the whole deal.

I will post pics in a week or two when I get the rest of the material.

If anyone has some more ideas before I go to sawing they would be appreciated.

I got the rest of the lumber today so I will try to finish this week. I will post pictures even though it appears that nobody cares anyhow.

I think its a fantastic idea! Great way to build a really large enclosure. I may be incorrect in assuming its at least a twin size bed loft, which would make the enclosure at least 6’x 3’ of floor space- great size for your boa if thats what you’re planning it for. That would make for a whole lot of possibilities (and a toasty bed for you in winter with the heat rising and all. ha! ) Take a look at some of the boxed lighting fixtures. Basicly they have a wire screen at the bottom of a plywood box with vent holes drilled near the top of the sides to let heat out. Place it on the warm side of the tank- or you could invest in a radient heat fixture. And a lip to hold the substrait in helps.

The floor space will be about 6’ 3" by 3’ 6", and the enclosure part will be about 3’ 2" vertically. It will in deed be for my lovely red tailed boa, Attila. There will be about 15" between the top of the enclosure and the bottom of the bed so I will have plenty of room for a box light with a ceramic heater.

It’s taking a little time but I will post some pictures as soon as possible.

Thanks for looking,

~Gus

The frame work of the entire thing will be done Thursday morning and it should be down hill from there. I am, unfortunately, going to have to partially disassemble it to get it out of the shop and into my room, but it will be more than worth it when all is said and done.

The frame’s done and the floor is in, so I am just a top and a few walls away.

It’s certainly not a priority at 6:15 AM, but I will do my darnedest to remember. I think I am over the hump in the construction process so it’s now or never for midway pictures.

Also, it looks like you would be the one to ask about making a thermostate. I watched the dimmer video and will be making one for the enclosure, but I was curious about making something a little more dependable for the days that I am gone and it gets cold.

Thanks,

Gus ... these are very dependable , I went away for 13 days at Christmas ... fed the snakes and set the temps ...I also use a timer for on off switching... the lights go on and off the UTH stays on 24/7

Trust me this dimmer is rated at 600 watts ... far superior to the reptile rheostats...
I can power multiple 8 watt UTH’s ... and 3 bulbs totaling

The timer is INTERMATIC (dual outlet) HB88RC Digital Outdoor Timer (7 off /7 on per day /7 days)
The dual outlets can not be set up seperately... they both work together. But it is just great and after about 1/2 hour I programmed it (instructions are a bit confusing)... tested for 2 days ... and adjusted ... Very accurate to the minute.
20.00 at Home Depot .....in the electrical dept. , near the outdoor / indoor lamptimers, usually well hidden, due to the fact they are seldom sought after.
HB88RC

This is the one I built for myself ...and a few others..... I sent them out as Christmas gifts this year to some special friends.

The addition of the extra FULL POWER receptacle allows me to plug in many items... including a six pack strip and then some more stuff.

If I wire it slightly differently I can get the receptacle to work off the dimmer also... just depends what you need? Imagine 5-7 dimming receptacles.....lol

All in all , this had saved me tons of money and effort ...I have used these constantly for 2 years now and I have 2 of them in use ...snakes and geckos
Plus 2 timers...

I have sent out at least 4 this past christmas ... and no reports of failure have ever surfaced.

If you need any help let me know ...or I can send you one at cost.

Chris

Chris

I made myself a dimmer yesterday and it seems to work well. It also has a dimmer switch that you can push to turn it on and off without turning it all the way down. That part is kind of useless but maybe not. I do have a timer that I us, so I am good there.

Thank you very much for all the information. I think I will make the one with the outlet and dimmer both on the box. Also I may be able to get some pictures of the cage/bed today but I am not sure. If I do I will post tonight.

Thanks again,

~Gus

Just checking , glad you are good to go on that item ,

...yep the on off is just a feature that I don’t use ... but I priced the dimmers that light up and give an indication that they are on .... every few days I check and make sure everything is just right ....glancing at a visible light would be quicker and re assuring. It’s a shame they want 2x as much or more depending...the sliding Decora switch ... and the touch sensitive units are 15.00 through 20.00 ....lol

I used the handy deal on the members area and it looks like the vivarium will come out to just over 530gal. with about 22.5 sq.ft. of floor space.

Just thought I’d let you know.

Someday, when you see a thread with somebody asking about keeping them in underbed storage containers, you can say "Hey, great idea," and show them a picture of yours!

It doesn’t bother me. If nothing else it keeps the post up on the list. I’m just keeping you up-dated.

It seems that the guy with the shop key has disappeared for spring break and I can’t track him down for the life of me. I am really hoping he shows up tomorrow.

I took pictures this week, but the pictures of just the frame are on a camera that I can’t find the cord to, so the only one I can post for now already has some siding on it as well as the floor put in.

Here it is so far and I will try to get the frame pictures soon.

Hope you can see it.

Thanks,

A lot of it is old growth fir, I believe, but all the siding (cut at forty-fives) is floor boards from an old house so I am not sure what kind it is, probably also fir. I will take more pics this week and post them along with the frame work pictures if I find the cord.

Well... here it is, all it needs is the doors on the front, a light box, and a mattress on top. You can’t really see the windows on the ends, but I will make sure to get several angles when I take the "finished product" pics. Sorry for the delay.

It has nothing to do with anything, but I have to share the fact that I got myself another baby badger this year. So I now own a Grozny’s Lacerta, a Boa Constrictor, a Gold Fish, a Dogote (Dog/Coyote), and a Badger. Quite the medley as I’m told.

Awesome enclosure. I need to get working on mine. (Ill need two!) but I live in an attic space where the gabling goes down a foot from the floor in most areas of the house. Ill need to make mine kinda triangular. Ha!
Your snake is gonna love it. You could just about put a kiddie wading pool and a tree in that sucker.

Looking good ... I see a picture frame on what I would think is the area for the matress ? What is that for ?

I looked up the Badger....LOl... I thought it was a mammal ...but instead turns out to be a lizard ...from none other than AGAMA...nice ...or am I really off the mark here ?

I also saw that you had some in 07...according to a post in Lacerta..here on RZ...
Link

I think it’s a great loss that Bert passed ...I hope someone continues his efforts.

Soon I am receiving an Austrailaian water dragon ...that my friends in Georgia got for free from AGAMA.

It needed a bit of TLC and rehabing ... but he is fine now. The brother is not breeding them anymore...so all I need is a female too ... we shall see.

Good luck
