 Cage Temperatures

In my new cage I built for my red-tail boa, I need to have a basking spot of 90*F and a cool side of 78*F. The basking spot is under a infrared bulb on a dimmer, so it is easy to adjust. The problem is that when basking temps are perfect the cool side of the enclosure is only 71-73.

Are there any suggestions on bringing up the cool side temps with out a huge amount of electronic changes?

Thank you very much,

~Gus

Purchase another basking light, use it with a dimmer. Adjust the dimmer for the amount of light the fixture will put out for heat.

I might be confused about what you’re saying, but it seems that would only add heat to the hot side. My hot side temps are perfect, I just need the heat to radiate toward the cool side a bit more, hopefully without adding a heat source to the middle of the enclosure.

Thanks for your help,

~Gus

I.E. put a basking light on the cool side. Use the dimmer to bring up the temperature five degrees.. Your enclosure is pretty large, so other then using another light I don’t know what else to do.

I thought I replied to this about three times now, but evidently none of them posted.

Anyhow, I am figuring on how to get a low wattage light somewhere towards the middle of the enclosure.

Tanks for the help,

~Gus

my under take heater claims to only use four watts. it really depends on your substrate too. you could choose one that transfers heat easier. I do not know know what the care of anoles requires, but sand and rock transfer heat easier.

LOL,,, hey gus ... did you trade the boa in for an Anole ...j/k

I was gonna say an under tank heater... but I also agree about installing a 25 watt bulb and fixture

Here is a fantastic product ....I ordered four and they work great on a dimmer..cheap too
They are made by Zoo med or Mega ray ...but Mega ray must have purchased a boat load ...they are 1/2 the price of Zoo Med’s and come in the same box...60 watt heat project

I switched from an infared red 100 watt ... and never have to use the CHE again.

First of all I haven’t even seen an anole in over 18 months, but I can’t seem to change my name.

I think I will certainly be putting in a lower wattage bulb of some sort that might only go during the day to allow for night temps to drop a bit to where they are now. I don’t know about the Mega-Ray deal though, I need the heat spread more than directed, and boas don’t require any extra UVB so I may find something else. The link is on my favorites just in case, though.

Thanks,

~Gus

The unit is only a heat projector ...no UVB... coiled carbon filament over a ceramic cone.... very nice ...I like it ...although somewhat directional, .....on a dimmer excellent results.

I am using it for my 2x2x4 at night outside on the back patio.... average outside night time temps are 60-62 as the enclosure is kept out doors.... inside the enclosure a perfect 72-74 F.

Off during the day as ambient temps reach 82-85...

I misread the article where it started talking about using it with their UVB bulb.

I may look at it a bit harder after all.

Thanks again,

It’s been getting pretty hot here lately, so room temperature went up. So the cool side temps are perfect, but when it starts cooling down again I will have to make the adjustments.
