 Pine Vs Spruce

I’ve been wondering this for a while and I haven’t seen it anywhere else on the forums.

I’ve read on here that using pine and ceder are bad for the snakes.

My local lumber yard stocks both pine and spruce 2x4s etc.

Is spruce also bad or is it just the pine and ceder?

Cedar contains irritating sap and aromatics. Pine much less, but still there (taken a wiff of PineSol?) Fir or hemfir or spruce would be much less problematic. The most important thing is to have it properly kiln dried -and smell it- if its pungent or sappy then get something else. If you want to be absolutely safe then spend the bucks on poplar.

Good to know.

Poplar huh. Never would have thought that would have been useful for much of anything except firpit wood... Around here we call them weed trees.

We have a large abundance growing where i live, now I’m getting some crazy ideas for trimming this cage out......

Cedar kills anything. pine is very questionable as is most softwoods. oak ply, poplar ply would work look for formaldehyde free materials.

good luck

Or Alternatively...apply several thin coats of Marine Polyurethane varnish, letting it dry out COMPLETELY between coats for that all over sealing in of the aromas which are bad for the snakes, and sealing OUT the humidity which can warp and rot boards if they tip their bowl or just from the day to day 55%+ Humidity they should have.

Redwood and Eucalyptus are also on the list of No No woods. Pine can be used if sealed thoroughly.

Oh hey, and if you’re gonna trick it out with some nice trims...Tulip wood, Tiger Maple, Mahogany, Ebony bits inlaid could be pretty if you know how. I personally would love to have an enclosure made of Teak...since its so moisture forgiving...but yeah...priiiiicey!

i like stuff that sounds/looks pricey...

i also like looking for whatever scores i can find as far as "scrap wood" After all, if it can be built, it can be disassembled and rebuilt into something else. :P

i find the goodwill and salvation army stores we have to be a valuable resource for wood products that people don’t really appreciate, and give away cause they thing its junk. Its amazing the finds you can find when you know, or have someone with you that can identify a wood by its grain.

I once bought a solid oak dresser (even the drawers and backing board were solid planed slats) for 14$

the wood alone would have cost me over 300$ due to its dimensions and being solid wood. (the top alone was a 6’x20" solid sheet.) Around here, trees dont get that big no more.

I truly can wait to start bulding this thing. Im getting such a mental image of how this viv COULD look, its driving me mad. haha

Hurry up snow -- start flying...daddy’s got some building to do.

Just had a conversation with a buddy that does railing for a living, he has a load of solid maple and oak "foot" boards he’s willing to part with. So he’s gonna drop it off with my this weekend. Aside from a few elecrical materials, I almost have everything I need to get this build going. I’m picking up my glass possibly tomrrow so Ill post pics of what im starting with hopefully by this weekend, and get some ideas flowing for how its all coming together...

I keep loking at different parts of my house thinking "If I put it there, I can make it a foot longer, or a couple feet wider.."

I think im gonna have a problem of not knowing where to draw the line.

How are you going to heat the cage? I am getting ready to build one myself. I have all the basics handled. I am having trouble getting info on heating. I want to use under cage heat. I have the top planned out to do cut outs with screen sandwiched between wood for lights and ventilation. Doors aren’t an issue, just the bottom and the heating of it. Thanks for any help you can provide. I didn’t get any answers to my cage help post.

Also what and where do I get something to treat the wood with?

there are alot of ways to heat the cage, alot of people swear by the under cage/floor heating pads, some swear by the heat lamps. Personally I’m going to try to engineer up a forced air system to keep my ambient air temperature somewhat stable throughout, and use lightless heat lamps for basking zones.

There actually is alot of information in this forum about cage heating. You just need to use the search feature, and see what others are using, then plan yours depending on your own needs.
