 Do you HAVE to have a heat pad?

Hey i just got me a corn snake after having to get rid of my others befor i movd...I usd lamps and did fine....BUT do you have to have a heat pad? I mean i have a baby corn snake and use a lamp atm just got him but should i use a heat pad? I dont ahve the money atm..But if i HAVE to get one i guess i will be..Thinks:)

It’s debatable, heat pads vs. heat lamps. I believe that as long as you have the correct temps in the enclosure it doesn’t matter how you get the temps there. Although, there are benefits to a heat pad, such as the fact that snakes and other basking reptiles benefit from having a heat source that warms them from underneath. I use UTHs at night when the temps are meant to be lower, and a heat lamp during the day when the temps should be higher. If you do decide on an UTH be sure to invest in a dimmer switch or a rheo-stat so you can control the temp of the UTH.
