 Custom Cage Pics!

I recently built this large enclosure for my water dragon and basilisk. They love it! It is 6’2" H, 3’2" W and 3’2" L (474.92 Gal) screened enclosure. I hope this will give you some ideas of what you all an do, for those looking to build your own.

Yeah you shouldn’t mix species, and don’t water dragons need at least a 4x3x2 just by themselves?

Ya but oil based polyurethane protects the wood from rot, mold, warping, etc. etc. so If you didn’t than you need to. Ask any one on this site and they will all tell you the same. And what do you mean by "what if you didn’t?".

With a Chinese water dragon you need around 60% humidity (70% creates a lot of mold) and with a pretty much all wood enclosure you need an oil based ployurethane. With out it resp. infections, and diseases will happen very fast.

Yes, Oil based stain is better for humid environments (within a closed enclosure).
But as you can see Ryan has a screened enclosure, so there would be no vital need for an oil based poly. A water based poly will hold up a long time.
If it was an enclosed humid environment then yes I would recommend an oil based even maybe a marine varnish for water dragons and the like.

You need a good aquarium sealent, not nails. And nails are bad for cages, use screws.

Any large lizard like water dragons, could easily break a cage that is nailed to geather.

 What...NAILS OWN.....

Liquid Nails that is, that stuff is insane. Use it to attach all cage parts before screwing them together.

 What...NAILS OWN.....

i wouldnt use liquid nails to hold the joints together what i use for the enclosures i make and many many subwoofer boxes ive made you should use wood glue i prefer elmers probond that stuff is insane the joint will come out stranger than the wood itself then if you want shoot some liquid nails or clear silicone in there, the reason liquid nails is not good to hold it togerther is because its so thick and when you screw it together it actually squeezes it out and the probond or whatever wood glue will actually absorb into the wood making the 2 pieces 1

I am learning so much today. Heading to Home Depot after work, my shopping list is getting longer. Probond, oil-based polyurethane, melamine, lexan. Mr. Green can I borrow your staple gun? A nail gun would be nice, too- I have a broken finger and it’s going to be hard to put a cage together with one hand. Better get to work designing the thing- any suggestions for must-haves? I’ll probably just have it open from the top unless I feel really creative!

use screws, not nails. The screws will hold the cage together better.
