Pray....The family of crocs ie caimans alligators and actual crocs are quicker in water then on land... they are vicious hunters and can outswim you....even at a run on land at a straight dead run they can catch up (on land best to zig zag) Not to say they will go outta their way to attack you of course but to answer your question, yes they can if they wanted to, bite you under water...and drag you down to drown you... best resort if your away from land and dont have a knife....find religion and quickly or pray the darn thing isnt hungry

Not true. Here is a direct quote from crocodilian.com:

Quote:

The truth is, if you see a crocodile running towards you then it’s easy enough to evade. It’s when you don’t see it coming that you’re in danger! A crocodile’s greatest strength is not its endurance and stamina on land, but it’s ability to launch a surprise attack when you’re least expecting it. In other words, crocodiles cannot afford to give their prey the chance to flee - fleeing prey (on land at least) is normally dinner lost.

Quote:

MYTH! It is often said that you can outwit a crocodile by running in a zig-zag fashion away from it. This isn’t true! Humans can out run crocodiles on land, and a straight line is the fastest way of putting distance between yourself and the crocodile. Most crocodile attack victims never see the crocodile coming - they use surprise, not speed.

 BITE YOU!!!

No but Ive swam with alligators....

Reed you can quote all you want and thats great however I grew up being taught certain things so its going to stick..just cant teach a new dog old tricks...

as for the gators we had them in canals and the like.. never once had an issue with them making it a point..they were only bad about lunging at the cattle...

and Reed I have seen a calf run down by a gator that wasnt doing a surprise attack on him...a calf a critter with four legs.... so I think its very likely that while they dont have stamina for long distances for a short distance alligators are pretty quick (I say this because he posted it in the gator forum as well) when your taught certain things they stick with you, and a book can quote all it wants what I have seen is good enough to keep me thinking

Shotak ask yourtself this what is the liklihood of you swimming with a caiman? I mean think about it...as for Gators, Ive never had an issue or a problem not to say it cant and wont happen...HOWEVER They dont tend to be as agro as everyone wants to believe, I just steered clear... Fl its a pretty common occurance in a lake to be swimming up close to one and not ever see them.. the danger comes from the surburbia alligators that people have been hand feeding.. they lose their fear of man.... the ones that are true to theit nature will try to avoid you (Less its a group of babies that you threaten..where there are babies theres usually a mama close by)

my reason for swimming with them isnt intentionally. i live or should i say lived in trinidad and there are lots of caimans. my family and i normally go to a river that has caimans(not all the timed u see them but they r there). so sometimes i take a dip in the deep waters but very wary. so i thougth if i got in trouble one day, what should i do.

A calf, a baby cow. We raise them :D. The fastest I’ve ever seen a gator run was around 14 mph for a very short distance. Not saying I don’t believe you, I do, it’s just that my experiences, along with every documentary, every book, every website, and every expert I’ve talked to has told me that they can’t run very fast(long distance). And I can go MUCH faster in a strait line than in a zig-zag fashion.

I have heard they cant and wont bite under water as well BUT I know its not true, I watch my alligator dive down and bite gold fish under water, Now they do come up to the surface to swallow so water doesnt fill thier stomach or lungs when they swallow. But yes they do attack or bite underwater........

Actually they will swallow under water...they dont herd fish and turtles on land and munch on them... they are also notorious for deagging carcasses under to "rot away" and eating at them at their leisure... I have seen some drag prey above water, and I have seen mine eat under water....

my question would be, why would anyone wanna swim where they plainly had knowledge of crocs or alligators or caimans in the water or surrounding area? and also, is it legal to purchase and own caimans as opposed to an alligator? and lastly, what is the length of adult growth of a caiman?

This all depends on where you live. Some states allow people to own alligators, some allow people to own gators with permits, some don’t allow it at all. Same with caimans. In addition to state law it would be wise to check with local (city) laws as well.

This depends on what species you looking at. There are 5 species of caiman (and loads of subspecies, not to mention). They range in size from the 5 foot Cuvier’s and Schneider’s dwarf caimans, to the 6-8 foot common and broad-snouted caiman, to the behemoth black caiman which can attain lengths of 16+ feet.

I know gators are not deemed man eaters and they ussually are not very aggressive but I still wouldn’t swim with them cuz they have sensors on thier jaws that alerts them to any disturbance or movement in the water and they home in on it and any thing in the water is fair game for a gator, its not that they hunt for humans, they are opportunist and they take what they can get. A lady was swimming near the Glades in Florida and a gator saw the opportunity and took it. So its all about chance here, if someone was swimming with gators and lived it was pure chance, in waters crowded with many competing gators they are ussually very hungry because there are to many mouths to feed, they normally go after smaller prey but a starving gator eats whatever comes along....... You shouldn’t have to worry about gators chasing you on land unless you are near a nest and even then they ussually hiss and lunge and wont give much of a chase, they stay close to the nest rather than giving full chase........ But then again all animals sometimes do the unexpected so just be alert. If you run gators ussually stop chasing, they just wanna scare you away from the nest or thier territory.
