Caimans and goldfish Hi I just purchased a caiman about a month ago and i have a question/problem. I have feeder goldfish swimming with my caiman although these aren’t the main part of his diet i usually feed him pinky mice (does it make a difference if they are fresh or frozen nutritionally?) crickets and other insects, meat and things of that sort. But my main question is is that i had six goldfish living with my caiman and he all of a sudden decided to eat all six within the same night which i was asleep and i was wondering i have heard that these fish have a chemical thiamese i think its called will he have health problems since he ate six at once or will he be ok. I am new to this site and would appreciate your help.
Thank You

Caimans and goldfish What your referring to is simply B-! deficiency...usually it only affects animals that are given the diet of primarily fish....the fish have high concentrates of thiamenese (Sp might be off..) when you freeze or thaw it only worsens things...if your going to use fish for them heating them to break down enzymes tend to help, or giving them a B 1 supplement, you also have problems of necrosis of fatty tissue that can occur with oxydization due to not giving fresh fish... if you want to avoid it.. give it a chance of variety use raw chicken various warm blooded animals ie mice... your guy ate 6 but as long as your not feeding SOLELY fish he will be fine what you refer to usually is caused by people keeping them strictly on fish and not allowing them other supplements..keep the light proper vary the diet (in the wild young ones eat insects small mammals small turtles ect...the bone and marrow is what gives them the calcium intake amongst other variations) if you can come close to this diet your guy will be fine... just alter the fish..give him crickets... small mice... chicken legs or venison... avoid giving him JUST organ and tissue he needs the bone and marrow...
