 CAIMANS as PETS?????

Dogs as pets??? What??? What will you do when they grow up and tear the furniture up??? What will the neibors do when the see a 4 foot Chocolate Lab in your back yard??? Oh my God lol To each his own, If the Jones can have a Dog then a person should be able to have a caiman. Some people here take good care of thier crocodilians and they can be less hassle for some than having a dog or cat, I love cats, I want a tiger, well not really unless I hit the lotto and had a fence around and on top of its enclosure to make sure he dont get out and eat a kid. I do believe people should be responsible for other peoples saftey and careing properly for thier pet what ever it may be, but to me if you cant handle a caiman you shouldnt be allowed to have a dog either, they both need care and they both need someone to make sure they dont bite a neibors kid.......Peace

I think there is less chance of the neighbor’s kid getting bit by my caiman than there is him getting bit by my dog! My dog runs around the backyard and the kid might reach his hand through the fence some day while he’s eating.

On the other hand, you can’t get into my croc pond enclosure without me or a key.

Still....a dog will love you. A caiman will tear you in half and eat you, if it’s hungry.
What if you were feeding the thing and it tore your arm off? that’s something a cat could never do.

No but a cat will shít all in your house
Shed fur
And tear all your furniture up.

Yeah, my future caiman may tear my arm off, but he’ll look at me when I say something.
A cat will just keep walking because its stupid.

Besides if he gets full grown I’ll just release him back into his natural habitat. Your swimming pool.
Then I get a new one, that looks the exact same, acts the exact same, and repeat the whole process all over again.

(For those without a sense of humor, the last part was a joke)

Hmmmm....losing an arm....being ignored, losing an arm...being ignored....tough decision. And who’s to say the cat isn’t extremely smart for ignoring you :)

That was funny about the swimming pool!

Ok seriously though, anyone who gets any type of crocodilian should have the common sense that whatever gets near the mouth of said animal will be most likely gone for good.

My biggest argument against you is, compare how many dog attacks / deaths there are to crocodile related attacks / deaths. I promise you’ll find more related to dogs than crocodilians.

That is because most people try to avoid crocodilians. I am not saying I hate them, I actually love waching them, but to want one as a pet would be like...... wanting a dinosaur!

Well, it is scientifically proven that crocodilians are the closest thing to a dinosaur.

To answer your question though, it’s preferance.

People prefer different things. Some prefer dogs, some prefer cats, some prefer reptiles. Out of reptiles some prefer monitors, some prefer small lizards (ie geckos, bearded dragons, etc) and some prefer things that are much muhc larger like crocodilians. Yes they are dangerous, but so is every animal that has a mouth large enough to bite down and cause tissue damage.

Actually, crocodiles and dinosaurs only have a same ancestor from the archosaurian group. Birds are directly descended from maniraptoran dinosaurs(velociraptors,t rex) so birds are the closest thing to dinosaurs. There were many half bird half dino things in late cretaceous mongolia and china.

I am a dino dork!

As for preference: why a crocodile? And leopard geckos can bite down and cause tissue damage, but they’re as bout as dangerous as a tulip....

To solve all problems don’t allow it to have the chance to bite you. Also crocodillians have been around since dinosaurs were alive, so yeah I’m calling it a dinosaur. It has earned its right to be one in my eyes.

Wait no birds evolved in mid jurassic from a group of small dinosaurs(can’t remember name)

All members of maniraptora have a bird-ancestor. Yup, T-rex evolved from birds:)

 CAIMANS as PETS?????

Crocodylia now belong to a group called Crocodyliformes (e.g. Sarcosuchus) which range from the Triassic period. Above both of these are the Crocodylomorpha (Mid-Triassic). This form is by far the most diverse and maybe the least understood. Older Crocodylomorphs were very graceful, slender forms resembling a few modern crocodiles such as C. johnstoni which can move very quickly and can even run in a full gallop. It was not until after the extinction of the Phytosaurs at the end of the Triassic that the Crocodylomorphs evolved into crocodiles of modern aspects.

All crocodilians are thought to come directly from Ornithosuchian, which produced the first crocodilian like animals called Crocodylotarsi. Ornithosuchia may be considered by some to be the primitive sister taxon of Suchia (Crocodilians) because of the possibility both normal and reversed ankle variation being the same crurotarsal joint. However, others believe since Crocodylotarsi possessed a "reverse crocodile" ankle arrangement (a peg from the calcaneum fit into a socket on the astragalus) makes them only similar to modern relatives by their carnivorous habits and body form.

 CAIMANS as PETS?????

now back to the main topic
I’d like to tell you guys about my amazing non-reptilian animals. They’re the best little dogs in the world. I can’t even bring friends over without feeling like a bodyguard for a KKK leader in Compton!!! And better yet, i can’t even walk into a room w/o the worry of being bitten. And the best part is that the one bit my baby brother in the face twice already!!! Aren’t they awesome?!? And no need to walk them they’ll just pee and poop all over the carpets. And the cats are just as cool. I can’t even lay my clothes out w/o them being covered in hair and possibly peed on! And don’t worry about the litter boxes, they just poop on the basement floor, and they even hide it for you so you can smell it later!
Like who would want a caiman with loving animals like them?!?!?!?!?!

 CAIMANS as PETS?????

Nice comment! I like almost all animals, including cats and dogs. I don’t have to walk my caimans nor clean the stinky cat litter box that will terribly smell up the house no matter what you do.
In any case, while caimans can’t be pets in the same way as cats and dogs, they can be pets in a sort of "caiman way". I have 5 caimans (you can see my pictures), 3 male and 2 female. "Panama", a 6 ft. male, I’ve had for 35 years. He knows his name and is moderately responsive. He will ask to come out of his section and ask me to let him back in. As long as I don’t do something stupid to go out of my way to provoke him, he is relatively tame and will let anyone pet him. That isn’t to say that he likes to be petted! He could care less! This "pet caiman" situation took years of patience to achieve. It can never be achieved by keeping the animal in any kind of tank. It cannot be achieved through unwanted handling. The caiman must choose, on his own, to trust you. In fact, a single act of intimidation or handling can undue months of developing trust. These are alpha predators, of course. They respond to intimidation and forced handling with aggression. Each caiman has his/her individual personality. Some will never tame, others are tameable (relatively speaking, of course).
