don’t feed goldfish! they are dangerously high in vitamin A, have lots of parasites, very fatty, and have thaimanese, which destroys thaimine.

I’m not sure if this applies to Spectacled Caimen but my Schniders Dwarf Caiman likes to have more "land area" and places to "hide" than your set up allows. Maybe Spectacled don’t need as much land but they do need a basking area of some sort.

I agree.... Speckled caimans don’t need as much land so i’ve been told... She has a heat lamp right above her docking area... Plus you can’t really see in the pictures but the gravel is built up so she can go on that aswel... This is just a temp winter setup as i’m building her a bigger enclosure.... Oh she has lots of places to hide too.... Post some pictures of yours!!!! I’d like to see them

 Baby Delilah...

Hello again Phoenix, Yes, he is a smooth fronted caiman. There are two species of smooth fronted caiman, the Schniders,(Paleosuchus trigonatus), and the Cuviers,(P. palpebrosus). I would have rather had the Cuviers because they tend to be slightly smaller and I’ve heard less aggressive than the Schniders but I don’t have any first hand experience with both, so I don’t know for sure. Both tend to be more aggressive than some of the other crocodillians but maybe they have to be due to their smaller size. Mine doesn’t particularly like to be handled but he puts up with it. I bought him in December and he was 9 months old when I got him,(so he will be one year old in March). I haven’t tried to handle him much because it has been too cold for him to be out for any extended periods of time and I didn’t want him to get sick from the low temperatures. When it starts warming up I will take him out more to get him used to being handled. His terrarium is about 90 degrees under the sun lamp and the water temp is about 85. I’m attaching a pic of his "winter quarters". It is about half land with a 6" deep gravel bed so there is enough depth for his burrow under a "log" that over hangs the water. The other half is water with an undergravel filter and a power head for the filtration. It’s a little more work than some set up’s I’ve seen but more like a natural environment. Some of the plants are real and some are imitation. I feed him live feeder fish,(not gold fish), crickets, live mice, shrimp, and occasionally meat scraps like chicken or pork. I am in the process of designing a larger encloser for him that will be about 3.5 ft. by 8ft. for next winter. Otherwise he will be kept in a fenced in area in my back yard with a kiddie pool. I am able to get away with that here in Texas and by the summer he will be big enough to discourage any raccoon or opossum that might think he would make a nice meal!
I wish you good luck with your Spectacled. I hope you have the room and resources to keep him/her when it starts putting on some size. There is a guy near me that keeps Spectacled Caiman, but he lives in the country and has a large pond and enclosure for them. His neighbors still give him a lot of grief though.
