Caiman "training"? I have had my caiman now for about 3 months. All the info I have came across is just about their care and temperment. I read a little on target training. I was just wondering if anyone has "trained" their caiman to actually like being handled. I would love to just pet her and hold her without holding her around the neck. She still almost always has her mouth open whenever I handle her. The man I got her form said to handle her like every other day. I have been handling her almost everyday and I have tried the target training but she will not come to it. I sort of have to push her over by the target and then i give her a treat. If anyone can help me out I would very much appreciate it.

Caiman "training"? Good luck with... caimans are not really animals that can really be trained.... and also in my opinion you will never have a caiman that you can just have sitting on your lap petting.... You always have to be on guard with caimans.24/7.... I have one and she has become more tolerant with handling but i never let my guard down ever cause if she gets the chance she’ll run away or try to bite....... But back to the training i can’t see that happening...they are just to mean.... Now american gators you can train

Caiman "training"? thank you so much for the reply. i know the gator would have been a better choice, however, the size was my concern. how did you get your caiman to be more tolerant if i may ask? and how often do you reccomend me handling my baby one? i try to handle her almost everyday. my boyfriend is into all the herps and is telling me i’m doing a great job with her but i handle her too much. hes not really into the corcodillians tho, more so just the snakes and bugs. anyone here in ohio i have asked questions to do not really give me any answers and have never knew of anyone to have one as pet. thanks again.

Caiman "training"? No problem.... I handle mine pretty much everyday for atleast 10 minutes.... Witth mine if i take her out and she opens her mouth and gets all snappy on me i give her like 2 minutes to calm down and then if she doesn’t i just put her back... I don’t wanna stress her out... But most of the time she is pretty calm.... I take her out and let her sit on my lap or chest and most of the time she will stay there unless she gets startled..... Some days tho i’ll have to hold her the whole time cause she’ll try and run away.. And if she gets away on me and i try to pick her up off the ground she gets really nippy............ So really i don’t think she is at all tame...She is just used to me reaching in her tank to get her out cause when she is out if she has the chance she’ll bite without even thinking about it..... I’ve actually been thinking of getting rid of her cause i don’t have the patience.... plus i’m into my snakes more too

Caiman "training"? I would advise against EVER handling a young Caiman after a meal as you may tend to disrupt digestion via physical movement or more likely stress.
