I’m getting a Diamond Caiman. Your knowledge on them please.

Hello,

I’m getting a diamond caiman, I can’t stop thinking about getting one. My friend has one and I met the guy that breeds them and they’re awesome! You can stick your hand in a tank full of the little babies and they don’t budge, much less attack. Anyways, I am getting a baby in October. I’ll be putting him in a 55 gallon tank that is 2/3 water and 1/3 land. Let me know exactly how to set it up. I know i need a water filter and a water heater, along with a heat lamp over the land area. Do I need any special UV lights? I am planning on feeding raw hamburger meat, that’s what my friend feeds. What do you suggest and how often? How long do they live, I know it’s long. I know they get 4-6 feet, males are larger. Anyways, all the info. you know on Diamond Caimans are appreciated. Probably not too much info. since there is only one breeder that has them and they are fairly new to the reptile world.

Thanks in advance for your help and knowledge. Please email me if you don’t mind at with the info. because I am slack about checking posts, there are too many sites and all. If you don’t email I’ll try to remember.

Thanks Again,
Stephen

These animals can get larger than six foot, due to the trig in the bloodline. Mitch hasn’t had these animals around long enough to figure the adult size. This year is his forth year going;or fifth?

You treat these animals as you would any other Paleosuchus, including feeding. FYI an all hamburger diet is a sure way of enjoying lost income. Colin’s has a lot of good info. on this Genus, I’d advise a read if you’re interested in these animals.

As for the claim on these animals being tame (I see Mitch claim this all the time), I suggest you only get this animal expecting a normal behavior. Out of all I have seen and all who I know have one, you’re likely to get hurt if you’re expecting a tame caimen.

Stephen if your caught with it, your going to get arrested and fined

SC law has a permit system in certain cvounties and bans in the others.. it is considered a "dangerous animal" not to be transported over the statelines ie from a Breeder, sold, bred or kept in captivity without filing all the nessicary paperwork, if you get one and someone calls your facing 5000 dollars in fines and jailtime...

the reason I bring this up is Im a Keeper as are others on here that live in SC and one false on another persons part...one error the bans become tighter.. and permits become harder to attain. Im saying this from the perspective of Law enforcement and from a standpoint of DNR. Ask yourself this

"Is it really worth it?"
"Do I have the right setup to apply for a permit"
"am I ready for this"
"Have I researched enough?"
"Do I know the laws inside and out"

you never answered my questions of what county or city you live in...or I could have told you whether it was a permit or a ban in your area... so Im taking it your afraid of the answer or dont want to hear it....but my advice is get your ducks in a row

Celtic why the attitude? I never knew you asked for my county or city. I live in Florence, South Carolina (Florence County). Yes, I want to know if they are banned or not from here. My friend has a diamond caiman and he is in SC with no permits or anything. It is only certain counties that bans or requires permits but not all of them are one or the other, some it is fine to have one without any permits.

i am not sure i understand your post but the childish name calling makes clear your intelligence. for your information many people get them and don’t realize they are illegal. in Illinois the laws are very un clear. i have talked with many districts/state and county representatives along with many reptile associations and i always get different answers. there is a law called dangerous animals and it varies state to state but there is a lot of confusion on the subject.

celtic responded because she has probably seized more animals from ignorant owners than you have owned. oh well best of luck to the guy who started this thread and i hope for your sake you are 100% sure they are legal.

Stephen Florence is "Shakey"

they are illegal however if you have them properly confined most officers overlook... though Im not telling you to get one...

SC all of it has the dangerous animal act but also has the endangered species act..gators were removed in I believe (dont quote me on the year) 1974... there is a loophole with caimans... if you have them as a croc species they can be confiscated but you can discuss keeping an "exotic" usually most tend to overlook it...

in SC a majority that is they require permits to legally keep and the aquiring of such permits can believe me be a PITA....

as of late the bans have been geting tougher and laws have been changing Ill see if I can find an updated list and send you the link

Newmis024 Interesting choice of words. I see whether or not your an adult, your most definately older than me yet you act more childish. I’m 13 and I think its great Celtic knows her laws, and gave a fair warning to who ever it may concern. Here let me pick on you now. Always start a sentence with capital letters.

You should really use dictionary.com sometime that should help you too. Remember to use periods they help people understnad what you are talking about.
If you want to get caught and have your animal taken away and be arrested and/or fined go ahead.

Hey There,

I actually own a diamond. I have only the best things to say about Mitch. He took care of me during the entire process, and is still a fantastic resource. From my experience, he is honest, and truly cares for his animals.

I own a male, and he is absolutely wonderful. He is not at all aggressive, loves attention, and is handled on a daily basis. He has yet to bite me. Now, don’t get me wrong, you should NEVER put your guard down, because respect is a must, but my diamond is an total sweetheart.

As far as diet goes, mine gets chicken gizzards at room temp, beef hearts, and as a supplement-Mazuri croc diet. The stuff is great. The alligator farm in St. Augustine actually got me hooked on it. It is a little expensive, but well worth it.

It is actually very easy to train diamonds. Right before feeding time, I tap on his tank three times, he verbally responds, and then I place the food bowl on his land area. I’m actually a certified animal behaviorist (with an emphasis on crocodillians) so if you need any tips, let me know.

Yours is the first, I know out of existance to be as docile as you claim. That’s not too shabby, but I still attest to anyone wanting one of these because they are claimed to be docile.

By the way, you’re not only feeding the Mazuri (Great for quick growth), gizzards (Good filler) and beef hearts (Another good filler) are you; if so, was your animal docile before you started this on it’s diet? This diet is.. Well.. Eh..

Get some pics of your animal.

Mitch use to have a photo of him holding a handful of baby king cobras, saying they wouldn’t bite... I once bought an eastern green mamba from him in Hamburg. Problem is, he had it labeled a "western." Huge difference. I liked it and bought it, but he just shrugged when I pointed out the error... So, don’t rely on Mitch’s outrageous comments too much.

No, that isn’t all he is getting to eat. He also gets various types of meat (hamburger, lean steak, chicken, ocean perch in small quantities due to oil and thiaminase, etc) but figured that feeding meat was a given. He also likes crickets, and snails. He gets calcium and vitamin supplements as well.

He has been docile from day one.

Most caimans are extremely aggressive and I also recommend that you not get 1 unless you have experience with large reptiles, preferably monitors. Their very fast, especially within their on body. Even as youngsters they have a hard bite, I say it feels like a mouse trap with teeth. And as they get older and larger (they will get quite large, 5 feet is big!!!) they will be able to do a good amount of damage to you. Fingers, hands being taken or disfigured is a good possibility, if you make a mistake. And everyone makes mistakes.

I say buy at your own risk but know what your getting into. Dont buy because you like how they look and 5-6 feet seems small when compared with crocodiles and alligators. Buy it fully knowing what your getting and what its going to become. They live long and NEVER become tame.

Other then that if your prepared and can give them a good home I say go for it.

Good Luck
Justin
