HELP!!!my cat (maine coon)is biting me!!!!!

I swear biting is a mainecoon trait. The mainecoon I owned a decade ago use to do that as well. He’d literally hunt people in the house, hiding behind corners and lundging out at wary ankles. I once looked down at him and he jumped up to hook his claw in my nose and hung there. Man was that painful. But at the same time he was still an independant cat and did save my life one winter night when the power in the house went out and the family became mildly hypothermic.

It could just be part of his wild personality. Like a breed trait. Mainecoons are long bred from a generation of cold-climate wild cats and all.

Remember to give him his space. If he wants to be left alone one day, leave him alone. Don’t run up and demand that he be petted or else. That’ll end up getting you bit. The best thing you could do right now is to associate yourself with good things on his terms (ie, if he’s catnapping or you’re feeding him). This will eventually result in the cat coming up to you looking for affection. Now if he’s attacking you dispite leaving him alone or he’s just being a naughty cat, I’ll list some training methods below.

You could do the regular training method and hook a small squirt bottle to your belt then nail him with it everytime he tries to gnaw on you. But I really don’t know if that’ll work with Mainecoons because of their love for water.

Hmmm...

I would have said to try food or treat training next for nice behavior. But that could easily have an opposite effect (he thinks you are the food, not the one giving it). You could still try it, but I’m not sure.

Go out and buy yourself one of those pet hand comber things. The thing that looks like an evil mitten. Spend lots of time brushing your cat with it. Being longhaired, the ’coon would definately enjoy it and using a glove instead of a regular brush would protect your hand should he choose to gnaw on you. This will build some cat/human trust and binding. He will come to learn that you are providing a good groom-over and May, MAY stop... However it’s still not fool proof.

The two last possible methods I could think of would either be the ultimate one - which is throwing him in a crate everytime he attacks you to let him know that doing so will result in unhappy cage time... Though this could result in the cat thinking being anywhere near you would result in that so it’s not preferred... Or contact a behaviorist.

Hah...i remember when i first received my maine coon cat, (kitten at that age) it was about 3 or 4 years ago. He was rough at first, but i suppose that since he was a kitten, he softened up to us, and now he’s our favorite cat. But he still does bite if you agitate him.

Apc, if your cat has short legs instead of long, and by the body shape and tail, I can see that your cat may have ragamuffin blood in her. Perhaps a ragamuffin cross. They’re a breed of cat that are built like a tank and are known to go limp when handled. But I don’t know of any that would hunt people, so that’s why I think it’s a mix. Perhaps a ragamuffin mainecoon mutt cat?

He’s just a mutt rescue lol...But I wish I knew exactly what he is mixed with. When hes standing hes really sturdy, but he goes limp when I pick him up its really cute!

Sorry I am kind of taking over your post jaeyke...But don’t worry my cat does the exact same thing, and I play with him everyday.

HELP!!!my cat (maine coon)is biting me!!!!!

Funny, I took in a coon about 2 years ago and have never had a problem with him. in fact he is diabetic and will take his twice daily shots with no problem and is a love bug at the vets where he goes for bloodwork every 2 weeks. He is 14 years old. He is also fixed, I woner if that had anything to do with it...

My Norweigan Forrest cat who passed a few years ago was like yours though. I had her declawed within her first year she swatted so bad. Fixed her at 10 weeks also but she was very ornery and for 11 years no one could get close to her without her okay, including me. but we gotta love them for who they are. Or at least tolerate them as my weggie did me :)~

My Velcro, the weggie and Recess, our coon cat. That is not a pose-that is how loving he really is.
