 Cat on a leash

It’s Monkey’s birthday today, so I wanted to share photos of one of his favorite things... going for a walk outside :) All of our cats are indoors only because of the busy road behind our house. KiKi and Jet refuse to wear a harness, so they have to be satisfied with their outdoor enclosure, but Monkey is just like a dog when he sees his harness and leash, and LOVES to go outside for walks. He’s getting better all the time about going where we want him to go, instead of us humans having to follow him around randomly.

Anyone else have harness-trained cats that like taking their humans for walks?

Yes, I did. Actually she was my Mom’s cat but I’m the one who took her out. Her name was Sable and looked exactly like yours! She never let us lead which was quite a bore. Our reason for doing it was because Mom got her declawed and she was always escaping to go out. Mom figured if we leashed her she wouldn’t attempt to escape...wrong. I don’t think it was fair to her since the other 2 got to go out on their own (not declawed) but I guess Mom was thinking of their history (one born in a barn on a farm and the other a stray who lived in our backyard all summer until Dad snuck her in).

Anyways, nothing wrong with it on a whole. I’m glad yours enjoys it! I still find it so weird to see.

 Cat on a leash

Her is Star...she started to wonder so i put her on a leash. She is a indoor cat but pop-pop used to bring her out as a baby so now that they moved to Florida i was stuck with her getting mad cuz she wanted to go out with us. I don’t smoke in my house so she thinks that when i go out she should. Man she drives me crazy sometimes so...She now has to deal with a leash!!!!

 Cat on a leash

The harnesses for cats are pretty secure. i use one for my guys when i take them to the vet or out to a pet store. They do get used to it rather quickly. Some of mine, though, would need a dog’s harness-LOL!

HEH!!! My biggest is our 19 lb Maine Coon, Gandolf (may have seen his pics???) A good friend of mine/"sister" Has a 25 lb. cat! WOW! Love Ragdolls too, we had one in foster care briefly-you could try a small dog harness i’m sure, just make sure it’s the "figure 8" style & not the "H" style harness-know what you mean, i was thinking of building ours an outdoor run...

 Cat on a leash

We started Monkey on his harness when he was about three months old, so he grew up just thinking it was normal. Our other two cats that we got closer to being full-grown have never adjusted to a harness and hate them. So... if anyone has kittens, now is the time to start harness/leash training them, much easier than when they are adults. And I have to admit, it’s really fun taking Monkey out on his walks, and easy to take him to the vet or anywhere with a leash.

 Cat on a leash

Just a word of caution for those who want to put a harness on their cat....make sure it is loose enough that they are able to escape out of it should the need arise.

My younger sister had taken Sable out for a walk in our yard and let go of her leash so she could carry something. When she turned back to the cat she was gone. That night Sable returned without her harness or leash. The next day I went exploring in the swamp where I thought she had gone and eventually came upon her harness snagged on some low branches. Thank goodness it was loose enough otherwise she would have strangled herself!

Another time, I was out with Sable when our neighbor’s hyperactive dog from down the street made a beeline to my cats. Sable took off so fast I couldn’t hold onto her leash with the dog chasing her. Meanwhile, my other cat, Pansy (not leash trained) was chasing the dog trying to protect her younger "sister". The dog grabbed her leash while Sable struggled to get free. Pansy was running laps around the dog trying to distract it. I was screaming for help as I grabbed Sable to help her get the harness off. I finally managed to do it as the dog’s owner finally showed up saying she just wanted to play. I picked up Sable who still didn’t know what was going on. She bit the side of my face (I still have scars from her teeth marks) and as I pried her mouth off my face, she bit through my finger nail. The dog was taken home.

My neighbors and family came out towards the end. My neighbor threw a towel over Sable and gave her to my mother. Mom took her in and said she calmed down as soon as she was inside. One neighbor took me into her house to disinfect my wounds and bandage me up while her son and husband worked on getting Pansy down from a tree.

The police were called, I got a tetnus, and the neighbors were visited by Animal Control and the police telling them they had to put a fence around their yard. They tried arguing saying it was the first time the dog escaped and that Pansy roamed the neighborhood. The police questioned the homeowners which came up with the same answer we had given: Pansy has a 3 yard radius which included ours and our immediate neighbors on either side. They had no complaints saying she helped their gardens by keeping out the vermin. As you can imagine, a fence was put up within a week.

Moral of the stories: Keep the harnesses loose enough so they can escape should danger arise.

Yep, that’s a good point. Monkey can get out of his harness if he really wants to, we’ve seen him do it. He’s so funny, he’s just like a dog when he sees his leash and harness, runs to the door and starts howling and jumping all over the place. Our neighbors are fostering four kittens right now and they wanted to know how we got Monkey trained, I told them to start right NOW while they’re still kittens, that way they’ll be used to it as they grow and it won’t be a big deal for them.
