Dark times, gift from friends helping to heal.
A few weeks ago my 96 year old grandpa passed out at a concert. It was discovered that one of his heart valves wasn’t working properly so his doctors set him up for surgery. He had his surgery the past thursday and is doing okay at the moment but is still in the ICU. My dad died unexpectedly this past friday. I called my mom to see how my grandpa was doing, she said "fine but your dad’s being checked into the hospital. His blood pressure was way too low for them to do his chemo." It was no big deal they just needed to get his pressure up. So I went on with my work day. A couple hours later my mom called me in hysterics and all I could catch was "Get down to the hospital. You need to be down here. Get down to the hospital." and then I caught the words "passed away." I thought she was talking about grandpa since what dad was having done was basically routine. I tried to calm her down so I could catch the whole thing when I just happened to catch "Your dad." I left work and rushed to the hospital where my mom and brother were waiting with one of the hospital’s nuns. I won’t go into any more details about that right now because it’s still so hard and surreal. After I left there, I couldn’t go back to my mom’s house at least for a while. So I drove around and then stopped and called my really close friends who I used to work with until I had an opportunity come that I just couldn’t pass up. About an hour after I got off of the phone with them, I had to go into my former work place to pick up a check. The girls called me into the department to talk. Lots of hugs, lots of crying. Then they said "Well we’ve got something that might make you feel better, at least for a minute. You need a distraction." One of them left for a moment and came back with one of the cutest orange kittens I’ve ever seen! They knew I’ve wanted an orange male for a long time now and so within the hour of me talking to them and getting to the store they found me a seven week old orange male! Along with many "Call us if you need anything, no matter what it is, no matter what time of day or night,"And kitty has definitely been a great help. Not just to me but to everyone in the family. When we start to get depressed we throw him a toy and watch him run, jump, and do summersaults with it. That never fails to put a smile on everyone’s face. I’ll get him an official name in the next few days. For now (And possibly forever) he is Sir Robin. If you’ve seen Monty Python and the Holy Grail you know who that character is. |

Though a pet can never replace a loved one, they can certainly help in the whole grieving process. I’m sure your Dad is smiling every time Sir Robin makes you smile with his antics. Again, my deepest sympathies. Be so thankful you you have such wonderful, supportive friends. They will help you during this difficult time. |
