Heres my kittens and question about the mama...

hi. im usually on the water dragon forum and some of the others. i think ive posted my kitties on here before though...
just wanted to show my babies and have questions about the mama. she is basically a petite cat. part calico and something else.. it seems, ever since giving birth to the babies, she hasnt gained any weight. shes real bony like. she eats a lot an doesnt act sick. im thinking maybe its her breed or what ever is mixed in her. she has a very small face/head. yet long and sleek.

heres mama:

and here are her babies:

they are really healthy and fat. she only had 2 though, but its her first litter and she is about a year old. so, maybe thats why she only had 2.

also, can you tell what type of breeds she looks like she has in her?

thanks M-

Hi. She is a very pretty little girl. But she looks like a DSH or domestic short hair in other words plain cat. Calico is a color not a breed. As for her being really thin.. well having kittens takes a LOT out of mom and then nursing takes that much more out of her. Not to mention she is really very young. What are you feeding her? She needs a good high quality food while she is with babies. Preferable a high quality kitten food. Has she been to a vet since the birth? If not you might wanna take her in and make sure she is ok and no after birth was retained. Are you planning to have her spayed now? Like I said having kittens is really hard on Queens and takes so much out of them.. not to mention the nasty infections that can result from repeated heat cycles and such.

hi. thanks for responding. yeah, i need to get her to the vets for a checkup. its been real hard to get an appointment with them. probably a couple months wait, as this is a small, rural area.

actually, she has medium to long hair. i know you cant tell in the pics, but she has longer hair than she looks. thats why i was wondering what breeds she was. plus the skinny, sleeky appearance and shes longer than any other cats ive had. so, shes long and slim kinda reminds me of a siamese a little. i dont know...and her head is real small. again, thats not showing in the pic..

Isn’t that the one you adopted from a shelter? She wasn’t fixed?

Anyway, she looks fairly healthy. What type of food are you feeding her? She should be on a dry kitten formula, I suggest Royal Canin or Nutros Natural Choice Kitten food. She should eat kitten food (higher in fat and protein) until her kittens are fully weaned and she has fully recovered and is at a weight you are happy with.

The next thing to do would be to get her fixed! : )

put her on a good quality kitten food like they were saying. also she needs some sort of supplement like nutrical or some type of vitamins that the vet recommends. nutrical is good to keep around anyway because you can give to dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens. the kittens are going to take more out of her while they are nursing then when she was pregnant. it will drain her calcium as well. make sure you ask your vet about a calcium supplement. the kittens need to be checked for worms at about 3 weeks of age, or at least that’s what we do at my vet.

Thanks!! I’m SO glad to be back. I missed my kitty related discussions : )

I forgot about nutri cal, you should definitely give her some!! You can also get all sorts of good quality cat vitamins and supplements at the pet store. We use some sort of natural vitamin in all our kitty water that turns the water yellow (can’t remember the name for the life of me).

Also, cats are more likely to get upper respiratory diseases when they are stressed (having babies is stressful!). I recommend picking up some L Lysine at a drug store. It’s a human food supplement that you can mix in her water to help stop viral reproduction.

Yes, you can always use vitamins and Lysine. There is no way to really harm them with it.

Is she getting spayed?

Lol. Just make sure she doesn’t go outside, at least until she is spayed.

Heres my kittens and question about the mama...

Abby has had kittens before, I had the same problem with her. She was very skinny, I was worried she wasn’t getting enough nutrition due to kittens so I did a little research, she is a small cat as well. I found that the best way to get her to a healthy weight was to feed her three times a day, we used purina kitten chow and purina indoor cat formula mixed with some cooked chicken and a little cat mothers milk in a can over top. The mothers milk and kitten food gave her a little extra nutrients for the kittens and a little for her, and the chicken gives her a little extra protein to keep her lean and healthy. She was back to a healthy weight in no time. If you want you can even mix a little raw egg in her food to.

No raw eggs, they must be cooked.

My vet told me otherwise, but it’s cool, my cat never got sick or became unhealthy, I mean after all ally cats eat garbage and animals that have been dead for quit awile.
