 A kitten

We recently found a very small kitten running around in a pile of siding in my back yard. No one around my house has lost a kitten. The kitten is very skittish and runs under the pile if you get too close but its easy to find becuse if you call for it it starts meowing. Its very young and Im afraid somthing will kill it. I need help on trying to capture the scared kitten. Thanks in advance

Call the closest shelter to you and ask if you can borrow a humane cat trap. Bait it with some canned cat food.

Otherwise, try to corner the kitten with a box or carrier, grab its scruff, and put it in the carrier. If it is really young it shouldn’t be too hard to catch. Is anyone there to help you? Do you have something like a butterfly net to catch it with?

If you can catch it, you’ll want to get a hold of a no kill rescue to take it in. Keep it away from your cats (if you have any) because it could have parasites, worms, leukemia, etc. that can be passed to other cats. Just keep it in a carrier with a towel and some food/water for the night.

Keep us updated!!

We did try to bait it with food and it came out. It ate the food and meowed and ran back in. Its very hard to corner it because it keeps running under that pile. I do have a lot of friends to help me, we were trying to catch it today. We do have a really big fish net I’m going to try using that tomorrow. There was one time were I had a chance but chickened out. It saw me and its hair stood on end and then I thought well what if it bites me and is carrying something? As I thought this it got away, how embarrassing for a animal management student...

Anyway it did get a little bolder. A little while after I posted for help my brother was on the computer and he said " Kaitlynn come here I here meowing outside" and I asked him if it was our cat and he said no. I went outside and the kitten was on a bench sitting in front of my front window!! And yes I defiantly will keep it away from my cat.

Lol, don’t be afraid of it. It is very VERY unlikely to have rabies, and little else could be transferred to you from a cat bite.

I would say undo the pile of stuff and use a net to scoop it up. You could also try just sitting out there with a can of food and seeing if it will come out.

These are in order based upon which I thought looked the best and most likely to be able to help you. The last one looks strange...

Thanks I think we are probably going to take the cat to the first one. We know where thats at and I wanted to see if they are hiring at precious lives anyway. It would be nice to get a job there. How did you think the last one was strange?

They had no contact information and virtually no information about their shelter on what seemed to be their only website...just seemed weird.

That would be awesome if you got a job there! Be sure to call in advance and make sure they have space. Have you caught the kitten?

Dragongirl6 pretty much covered it for you. Just wanna throw in a tidbit of advice. If you are worried about being bite or clawed try a pair of leather gloves!!

Lol, good point debcat. I have so many cat scars up and down my arms that I don’t even feel them anymore : )

It’s always the friendly ones, too. I have very few from feral cats.

Good luck catching the kitten! Let us know when you do!

The kitten is no longer taking refuge in my yard but my neighbors. I helped take my grandmas pets to the vet today. I asked the vet if she lent out traps and she said no. She also said it wouldn’t be good to trap it anyway because it was a stray and wasn’t tame. She said to keep feeding it until it gets tame. I wanted to call a animal shelter but we got back kinda late and I think they had closed. Tomorrow I’m going to call and see if the shelter has any cages. Nothing really important just an update.

Lol, sorry, but your vet is totally wrong. Waiting to trap it will only allow it to get more and more afraid/feral, and then you will end up with a much harder cat to tame and get into a no kill shelter. I’d call the shelter tomorrow to borrow a trap ASAP!!

Great. If you can’t catch her now, you’ll end up with a larger, more aggressive, unadoptable cat breeding kittens in your neighborhood before you know it!
