 Problems with neutering my cat

we took my cat to the vet to get neutered yesterday and well we went to pick him up and i guess one of his testicles didnt drop. the vet said they would have to surgically go in a remove it for him to be totally neutered and it would be around $100. he said there is still the possibility that they dont find the testicle. with out it removed he will still show all the things of a tom. has any one else had this problem i could really use some advise here

It is not to common but it dose happen. It is called a retain testicle. You will really need to have the surgery to have it fixed and the sooner the better. Yes he may still exbitit the behaviors of a tom but a retain testicle can cause many other problems the vet should have mentioned. A higher chance of infections as well as cancer. Get it out and be done with it.

yeah i found that on the Internet the vet didnt even tell use that he had a higher risk of cancer and infections. im trying to convince my mom about getting this done but she said we just dont have the money. she lost her job a few months ago and i dont think my dad will spend any of his money on my cat (he hates cats). if i can find some way to get $100 im going to get the surgery done. wish me luck

how old are you? If you’re a teen, some stores hire kids as young as 14, you could babysit (if you’re a guy, even guys babysit), have your own garage sale and advertise with posters and signs. You can easily make $100 if you find a good way to make it.
Hope this helps

Yep, it’s called a "cryptorchid". Pain in the butt to do surgery on! Lol.

Yes, it needs to get done. Keep him indoors until you raise enough money. Babysit, mow lawns, ask your parents if you could work it off doing jobs around the house, etc.

I’m sure you can make the money. Good luck!

my mom said we can get the surgery done but now hes come down with this respiratory infection. the vet doesnt know what it is. hes been tested for HIV, heart worms, and leukemia and thank god they where all negative. we took him in on saterday and hes going back today to get chest x-rays. the vet thinks it could be heart disease, asthma, or allergies. if this respiratory thing goes away we will get the surgery done. i will post updates

Whoa whoa! Chest X rays for an upper respiratory infection?! If he’s sneezing and has gooky eyes, he needs some L-Lysine supplemented in his water (a human food supplement you can get at the store), some antibiotics, and possibly some eye medication. Chest X rays seems a bit extreme as a first option, and a bit expensive!

What vet are you going to? Just keep him indoors if he hasn’t had the surgery yet. Good luck!

What do you mean your vet is not sure what it is? An URI is a VERY common illness in cats and any vet even one straight out of school should know it when they see it. How are his eyes? Nose dripping?? Sneezing? Is he eating drinking and using the litter box ok? The vet should have given him some antibiotics and possiable a shot while in the office! If he did not do any of this and it is an URI then you might want to seek out a new vet.

hes on antibiotics and the vet doesnt know because shes tested him for all of what he could have and he doesnt have it. the x-rays showed no fluid but his lungs r inflamed. she gave use some other medicine and hes going back in a week or if he gets worse. he doesnt have heart disease, asthma, or URI. he doesnt have a runny nose, watery eyes, or sneezing just coughing and raspy breathing. she did give him some kind of shot for fluid in the lungs but today the x-rays showed its not fluid. but what confused the vet the most is (dif vet then who we took him to get him neutered) he didnt start this until after he was neutered (well half way neutered). ill post updates on how hes doing. i hope he gets better

 Problems with neutering my cat

Hmm, mysterious! You’re SURE it’s not a URI? It’s not exactly something you can test for, and symptoms vary from cat to cat. It is something that comes up because of stress, and getting surgery is always stressful.

Perhaps you should get another opinion....I’m not sure what else to tell you. If he is eating, drinking, has solid stools, and otherwise acts fine I wouldn’t worry a ton. Cats often cough after neuters because they had a gas mask on during the surgery as well. Chest X rays still seem unnecessary to me...

Is there anything in your house that could be causing it? Air fresheners, perfume, spray cleaners, etc.? Cats are very sensitive to these things.

Best of luck, I hope all goes well with him. Keep us updated!

We have had TWO cryptorchids in the last week. Such a pain! And so expensive for the rescue to keep having to pay for.

2 in one week wow

hes doing much better today. hes stopped coughing and isnt breathing as bad. he sure acts better too hes playing around like a kitten. i took some pics of him today.

playing with this little string thingy i found. it came with a tarp we got. its like some kind of thick red string with a ball on the end. i gave it to him to see what he would do with it

playing with is box i made him. i found this idea in a cat book. u cut holes in the sides of a shoe box and put a tennis ball in it. any cat will spend hours trying to get the ball out.

hes a vampire lol

Ah he is a pretty baby boy! It is 2:27am here and I can’t sleep due to a super bad migraine so forgive any typo’s please lol. Anyway do you know what anesthesia the vet used? There is a mix that can cause problems when used in cats. I would ask your new vet about it. That might be what is going on with your guy!

they didnt say what kind of anesthesia they used. ill have to ask about it. he still seems to be doing better so hopefully hes getting over it. i have had a few migraines i hate them too but one thing i know is that sleep will help get rid of it. when i have one it can take up to an hour for me to get to sleep but when i wake up its gone.

Yes do ask as that could be a clue as to what caused this. Even if he is getting better you will want to know so you can make sure it dose not happen again!

Sleep use to help my migraines but not so much now. They cause to much pain for me to be able to sleep and get worse when I lay down. Good thing I don’t need much sleep anyway lol... that and I have had them so long and often I have pretty much learn to "cope" with them and go on about my life. If I did not I would never get anything done!! The doctor keeps wanting to put me on meds but I have a 4 year old to care for and can’t really call the husband home form work when I have to take the meds as they force you to sleep... BOO HISS to headaches lol

Going OT for Debcat here since I too understand the agony of migraines. Hope nobody minds.

I usually experience visual phenomenons (flashes of lights, floating specks etc...) before the pain starts. I’ve found 2 Excedrin Migraine or Extra Strength (they’re actually the exact same thing) taken when the visuals start, keeps the headache away. There are also some great new drugs that dissolve on your tongue (in case, like me, when it gets full blown, even a pill taken with no water won’t stay down) that work WONDERS without any drowsiness or awful side effects.

You shouldn’t suffer, talk to your doc. And good luck!

Thanks for the info!! Wonder why my doctor has not mentioned this to me?? Makes me want think of attacking him with a bat!! LOL. Will have to call/go in and talk with him. Sounds like meds that would really help and that I could actually take. Having something dissolve under the tongue would be wonderful as I know what you mean about no staying down and it is NO FUN. And NO drowsiness would be wonderful as that is the other big reason I could not take any of the other meds. Seems 4 year olds don’t do well left to there own devices for long LOL.

Oh and back on topic for random info. That red string with the ball on it.. is a tie strap for your trap. Goes through the holes and secures it to poles etc.

 Problems with neutering my cat

Debcat,

The "dissolve on the tongue" drugs are amazing when the migraine is full blown. Wish I could remember the name....starts with an X or Z. (Isn’t that a big help?.....sorry :) ) But I’ve finally figured out that if you learn how to ward off the migraine before it starts you can have a normal life. (Even with an active 4 year old!) In my case, I experience the "visuals". If I catch them in time I’m good to go. Just pay attention to what happens before it becomes unbearable and take action then. It took me many years of thinking "I just had to deal with it" before I learned to be more pro-active. You really don’t have put up with the pain (as my mother did before new meds.). If your doc. can’t/won’t help then find a new doc who understands. It took me 20 years to learn to deal with the problem. Don’t let it take you so long.

Good luck! and God Bless.

hes breathing normal now and in a few weeks where going to get the surgery done. since he has been more playful then ever i bought him some cat nip toys. a red mouse, a weird calico colored mouse, a flashing ball, and a regular colored mouse. so far he likes the red and the calico colored mouse the best. its a good thing to because those where the cheapest ones lol. that way if he ruins them i can easily buy him a new one

bad news he just finished off the last of his meds about 3 or 4 days ago and now hes breathing weird again. he coughing to and i duno what to do. he had inflamed lungs and i read online that siamese cats r more prone to respiratory problems. we cant afford more vet bills so i duno what to do. its not heart worms, leukemia, or cat AIDs and the vet doesnt know what it is. she said it wasnt heart disease because his heart sounded and looked normal. she said it also wasnt asthma but im starting to think it might be. he was on baytril and methylpredniosolone (wow thats long) and they seemed to help. does anyone know what this could be?? im so confused and i dont want to lose him

It sounds like he has a cold. If the vet couldn’t find anything else wrong with him, then there isn’t much you can do. Just like in humans, there is no cure for a cat cold, or viral upper respiratory disease. The virus just has to work itself through.

You can go to the drug store and pick up some L-Lysine powder or capsules. Open the capsules if you get them and mix the powder into a small bit of wet food each day. Either two-four capsules or a tablespoon of the powder. Do you have other cats? If so, do the same for all of them, or mix the Lysine in with all their water to prevent them from getting it. It is just a human food supplement that breaks down viral reproduction and should help with the cold.

Other than that, just give it time. Good luck!

Did you ever call the other vet and find out what was used to put him under for surgery? Like I said that could be the root of the trouble depending on what was used. And if that was the cause then you REALLY want to find out before he goes under for another surgery.

i havent asked yet but the other vet said if it was the antistatic it wouldnt have made him this sick and it wouldnt last this long. if it was a cold wouldnt the antibiotics have stopped it? its been about 3 weeks to a month now and i dont think colds last that long. i do have one other cat but we have been keeping him in a cabin outside. its about the size of a small room but it was the only thing we could think of putting him in where he wasnt exposing our other cat. it has electricity and air conditioning so he should be fine. once this is all cleared up and he isnt showing any signs of being ill we will take him back inside. he seems to like it in there though he has lots of toys and stuff to climb on. i think he likes being able to claw on what ever he wants lol

He will be fine in the cabin. Just be sure to wash your hands before you touch your other kitty.

Yes, kitty colds can last a LONG time!! I’ve had fosters and seen cats with URIs for up to 6 or 8 weeks! And antibiotics don’t treat the actual viral infection, they can only treat bacterial infections that are the result of the viral infection. Bacterial infections cause the goopy eyes/eye infections, green or yellow snot, etc. etc. but the viral infection can’t really be treated itself.

Definitely try the Lysine. That will break down any viral reproduction and should help if it’s a viral infection he is fighting off. Make sure the cabin isn’t dusty, that could be making him sneeze as well. Either way, it can’t hurt and should boost his immune system.

What are you feeding him?

i called the vet yesterday and she gave use more of that medicine because it seemed to help. i clean the cabin rugs every other day and once a week i dust and sweep. he does still get to go out side though on a harness and leash that is lol. he likes it he will run around and attack leaves and stuff. at first he hated the harness but hes getting used to it and is starting to walk with me when i walk around instead of just laying there lol. its a old dog harness but it still works and im used this old light weight dog leash as the leash. im trying to get him out every day so he can get exercise and stuff but like i said on the bearded dragon forum im going out of town and wont be back till monday. a friend is taking care of all my pets. but she wont have time to take him out side and where taking the dogs with use. besides the outside dogs lol they have to stay here. shes going to call me on my cell if anything goes wrong. as for food im feeding him Purina cat show

It sounds like you are doing everything you can for him. No worries about him being inside while you’re out of town, I think he’ll survive : )

I would recommend switching the food. You can find fairly inexpensive foods that will be much better for him. Remember, what goes into him is what comes out of him. Purina isn’t the healthiest food you could be feeding. I would recommend Science Diet and Nutro Natural Choice as other options instead. If you are willing to spend the extra money, Innova, Royal Canin, or Evo would be my highest recommendations.

You’re doing a GREAT job with him. Try not to get discouraged, he’ll pull through. Good luck!
