 Getting Excited, Adopting a Cat

So, you guys probably don’t know this, but this Wednesday, July 2, 2008, will mark the 3 month anniversary of my dog, my best friend, Peaches’ death of old age (and anemia and a heart murmur) at 13 yrs of age. And although it’s a very sad time for us, we’re adopting a kitten from the local humane society! His name is Caesar, and we just filled out the applications today, so we don’t know if we have him for sure, but we’re really excited!! He’s about 6-8 weeks old and oh so tiny and fragile! He was the smallest of the batch of about 20 kittens, but he is the spunkiest, the rowdiest, and the most lively and always wants to play! I do think my dog sent him to us, because I see a bit of her in him. They were both spunky and lively, but liked to cuddle, yet were independent thinkers and the obvious leaders despite their small packages.
Anyway, we’re definitely going to change his name. We want a food name, because, not on purpose, we have had an accidental tradition of naming our pets after foods, and we’ve had about 6 "food pets", mostly cats, including Chocolate, Muffin, Oreo, Pickles, Cookie, and Peaches. We had Muffin as a kitten about 14 or 15 yrs ago before I was born but when my brothers were like 3-5, but she ran away in a couple months. Then we got Pickles, who has unanimously been our favorite cat, and fave pet next to, of course, Peaches. Pickles was gentle with us but independent, and got hit by a car about 10 yrs ago when she was an older adult. We got Chocolate when I was 4. she was very nasty to everyone but one of my brothers who she loved to death (my brother is like Caesar Milan but with cats; he’s every cat’s best friend) and she surprised us and became longhaired. Then we had Oreo, a stray who we fed and watered and took care of at our house who found a home.
Does anyone have any suggestions on names? We’re thinking Peanut or Cracker Jack, Jack for short. His siblings include Twizzler, Waffles, I think there’s a Sugar, Washington, and more. And his mommy’s name is Candy.
Also, any supply advice? We haven’t done this in about 7 years so we don’t know quite what to expect. Here’s his Petfinder link (we’ve played with him in person a couple times, I’m a volunteer).

Caesar

Very cute....congratulations. I’m sure you’ll get him.

As far as a "food" name for a tiger....Tony the Tiger comes to mind ("they’re GRRRRRRRRREAT!!!) Not sure he looks like a Tony but there must be a cereal name that fits. Something like Cheerio or Cocoa Puff? I’m not too familiar with all the cereals now but that’s an idea.

Don’t get too crazy buying stuff, just get the basics for now. Every time you go to the store after you get him you’re going to find something you just HAVE to get him. Start with the necessities; food, litter box, litter and baking soda (to sprinkle in the box). Buy a few toys like a couple of balls and mice and maybe a laser pointer (my guys love them). Remember that kittens are easy to entertain......a paper bag, plastic milk caps, tin foil balls etc... are all free. As far as a bed, what cat can resist a shoe box! You’ll also want a scratching post. WalMart sells a nice little combination kitty condo with a sisal post and carpeted shelf on top that’s fairly cheap.

Good luck with the new baby!

That’s awesome! Perhaps your family is ready for a cat and not quite for a dog : )

As far as supplies go, just start with the basics. Something important to remember is that kittens will eat everything! So get an edible kitty litter. I recommend World’s Best or Cat Country.

For food, I recommend Nutro Natural Choice Kitten, Royal Canin Kitten, or Evo. Pick a good quality food that you like and stick to it, mixing it around will upset his stomach. Also, I recommend dry over wet. It’s a bit more nutritious and better for his teeth.

If you want to train him not to scratch furniture, get a scratching post! Sisal is the best, just a small one will work.

Also, I suggest using a small room to keep him in at first (the bathroom works best), so he starts out with really good litter habits and so you know he is safe (not jumping off high things, getting lost, etc.) while you aren’t supervising.

Good luck with him! I’m sure you’ll get him : )

lol Caesar Salad. thanks for your help! We’re pretty pumped, we called my best friend’s place last night, cuz her mom loves me and I work with all their animals (I leash trained her cat, taught her dogs some basic obedience and tricks, etc.), and she told me she would be a reference if I ever needed one, so I left a message.
My aunt is our other reference, because her cat just died and she knows how much we loved playing with her cat and how responsible we are and everything. We asked her as she came in our house to pick my mom up for a carpool to the Cities (moline), and before we asked her, she said that my cousin (her sons)’s girlfriend’s dog had a litter of puppies and they wanted to know if we want one...my sis still wants the cat, and we’re still submitting the application, but I want the dog, too. I want it to be MY dog that I am solely responsible for and the expenses come out of my wallet (I am bringing in about $1500 a year starting this year between my columnist job for the paper, babysitting, and detasselling). I want a big dog (they’re black lab mixes) I can be rough and play with, because I want to do advanced competitive obedience and agility.

Well, we picked out a name!! It’s not a food name, and it’s not any previously mentioned names, and it wasn’t on our list of 36 suggestions. You’ll find out Saturday!! Here’s a hint: It’s in the range of letters A-H!!!!! And it’s SOOOOO cute :-)
-Peaches and Jeni
p.s. how do I keep myself busy? Tomorrow we’re buying the supplies as far as I know and cleaning out the bathroom, which is where he’s staying cuz his litterbox skills aren’t perfect (he can barely climb in the box lol) and he can’t do stairs as far as we know, so it’s for his own safety and we’re cleaning all the supplies. I can’t stand the wait I don’t know how you guys do it!!!!!
