 Just venting

A few months ago a family came in and adopted a very sweet tuxedo boy from our rescue. They seemed like an awesome family and they seemed to really want him.

Today the mom came in with the cat and her two kids and just started yelling at us because the cat had diarrhea on her bed and because it didn’t like being thrown outside when they had company over (indoor only contract, hello!), as if all of this was our fault. Then she just said "we are moving today and we’re leaving him here". WTF. So we calmly asked her how she responded when he pooped and she said "you know, I’d love to learn your little lesson, but I need to go" and she just glared at us and stormed out with her sobbing children.

Anyway, poor kitty was trembling and traumatized. If your cat has diarrhea consistently, perhaps you should take him to the freaking vet! How on earth could it be our fault if you adopted him months ago and he just started doing it?!

How rude! At least they didn’t just throw the cat out on the street. But there will always be people like that and there will be people angry for it. I would worry about pets being adopted out if I worked at a shelter, because you can never know for sure what there life is going to be like when there gone. Even I have begun to worry about what would happen to the kitten when its caught. And its not even my cat! (I think I’m starting to bond to it) I wouldn’t worry you will probably never see them again. How is the little cat? Have you taken it to a vet? Found out whats wrong?

First I say kudos to them for not kicking it on the street and bringing it back to you.... however OMG HOW LAME! Why on earth would you kick the cat outside when people are over? Even if its an allergy that doesnt make sence... and I totally agree about the diareah your cat gets taht (specially all over hte bed!) you take it to the vet!!!! O.o some people I swear!
I also give you Kudos (or whoever dealt with her) for not punching her on the spot lol... that had to be hard!

Haha! There was a counter in the way : )

He’s such a nice kitty, doesn’t have diarrhea here at all. Perhaps they just fed him bad food or stressed him out too much.

Anyway, I am glad they didn’t dump him outside. We’ve had plenty of those, too.

Ah Dragongirl6 I am sorry you had to deal with someone like that!! Do you guys do a home check before adoptions?? I would say you might want to add a new questions when adopting your babies. IE What do you plan to do with the pet when you have company over?? Heaven help the person that comes to my home and expects me to put my cats out or away while they are here... lol yeah that will happen NOT!! This is there home they live here you don’t! Don’t like it? leave! Is my attitude.

But there will always be people like the lady that returned the cat. They are part of the problem and sadly there are laws that don’t allow us to put them down...lol j/k!! Chin up girl you are part of the solution and you will find that poor baby an even better home!! We have all had a home that seemed wonderful turn bad and it hurts but we can’t catch them all. We can only do the best we can. But at least we are trying to do something which is more than most can say!

Thanks Debcat : )

No, we don’t do home checks. I’m kind of torn on the idea...on the one hand it would obviously weed out a few crazy people, but on the other, we wouldn’t have time to do nearly as much as we do if we were driving to each person’s house before every adoption.

Also, we (usually) get a very good idea of the type of person we’re talking to just in the initial process of showing kitties. Good idea with that question, though! I’ll add it to my list : )

Yes I am also torn on the whole home check thing. It will weed out a few crazy but as you say it dose cut in to your time A LOT!! Then again a lot of adopters don’t like having strangers in there homes either and it is not just the ones with something to hide that feel that way. A lot of great homes are turned off by the whole ideal of a home check I find.

As for the list of question to ask it just keeps on growing. There is always a new question to add lol. I actually find that some of the questions are more helpful that a home check could ever be. People tend to reveal a lot about there thoughts feeling and beliefs about pets when you ask the right questions.

Just a late post since I am usually at the iguana forum. Maybe the cat had diarrhea b/c it was given milk. Many people think milk is good for cats but I had a Norwegian Forrest Cat and a Maine Coon, both turned out to be allergic to milk. It gave them exactly this and it took about 2 weeks to clear their system out. Just a thought but sounds to me like she was having a very very bad day and you just happen to be the target to vent on. God luck!

Well, I would hope they didn’t give him milk since we had sent him home with a bag of food and a care sheet that explained why not to feed milk (as well as telling her out loud during the adoption).

I don’t care if she was having a bad day. You don’t go around dumping your family members in shelters because you are having a bad day.

We still have the kitty, by the way. He is so sweet, and no diarrhea!

Well dear, that just goes to show you how ignorant some people can be of their pets health. Sounds to me like she probably gave the kitty something that upseted his stomace, and they probably hadn’t cleaned his litter box so he went on her bed. thats what she gets. As for throwing the cat out when she has company, STUPID, I have company in and out of my house all day long, my cats never the one to bother anyone, it’s usually ace (the dog), so she was an idiot for that one to. Just be glad she brought him back, and you can help recover. So that he can find a family that is willing to give him a half way descent life. People do that to us all the time at my rescue, they’ll take an animal, bring it back weeks, sometimes even months later and have something to complain about, and it’s ALWAYS our fault. If they couldn’t give the animal proper care, they shouldn’t have even adopted it. They read contracts, they sign them, you’d think somewhere in reading those, even having them gone over, they would deside they don’t want the animal, that it’s to much. Just try and imagine some one bringing an iguana back because he wouldn’t eat, then you ask politly what their trying to feed him and they scream, pizza of course! He ate it when I first got it and now he wont! well, what a shocker, your feeding him something that hurts his belly! He’s supposed to eats greens, brocolli, cauliflower, exc. Some people are just ignorant.

Lol! I love your iguana analogy. We got a baby Rosy Boa last month (and by baby I mean a 3 year old the size of a baby) that the owner claimed refused to eat anything he offered (chicken bits, a carrot, and fruit juice!!). Well, even after the stress of moving and being in a new tank, etc. he ate 3 frozen/thawed fuzzies (not even live!) on the second day. Jeeze. He probably hadn’t eaten in a year.

Anyway, Chester is awesome. Hopefully he will be re-adopted soon : D

i adopted at a shelter (unfortunatly i could no longer do this b/c i am too busy with school and work) anyway we always got some crazy people in wanting to adopt and stuff

people are so weird lol

this one lady had 12 cats in the past 5 yrs all of them died b/c they got hit by cars !!!! when we questioned her about it she was like i dont know why it keeps happening i dont know what to do

its like duh maybe you should keep them inside lol

i could go on and on about all the crazies we got lol

before i volunteered there the majority of the returns were people who declawed there cats(after they sighned a contract stating they would not do that) and they were returning them b/c they now either bit and/or misused the litter box

this is why if you state on your questionair that you have had a cat declawed in the past she will only let you adopt an already declwed cat

people get very upset about this but she has had sooooo many people return cats after getting them declawed(and saying they would not) that she got tired of it

one guy returned a cat after 2 yrs b/c she got hair all over their new furnature !!! he should have known that would hapen before he bough the new furnature lol
