 Good outdoor cats

Hi, im not usually on this forum but my parents are considering letting me get a cat. they would help me pay for the initial costs and vaccinations and desexing but i would pay for its food each week. the thing though is that mum wants it to be a mainly outdoor cat so are there any particular breeds that dont mind being the only cat and like the outdoors? the neighbours have cats so it would have friends of its own kind.
Thanks
Kath

Having a mainly outdoor cat is asking for trouble. There are coyotes, cars, and other predators. There are other cats that can transmit diseases. Your cat could get in fights and wind up needing a lot of medical care. Your neighbors’ cats probably won’t be great friends with yours, they will defend their territory and possibly wind up seriously injuring your cat.

Why not keep it indoors as a pet and a member of the family instead of leaving it outside to fend for itself?

If you want outdoor cats, get a pair or trio of ferals. They sit in no kill rescues until outdoor homes can be found for them. They come spayed/neutered, microchipped, flea treated, wormed, vaccinated, etc. generally and keep each other company outdoors. You provide safe shelter, food, and any necessary medical care, they kill rodents.

Or, perhaps you could build a cat proof fence around your property...

Yes if you want a cat wait until you move out. Do not get a cat and make it live outdoors. An outside cat is a dead cat. I am sorry if that was to blunt but it is true.
